The Eternal Peace Lamp was lit on 1 November 1986 by Prince Gyanendra to commemorate the International Year of Peace. The flame was brought from the UN in NY, NY, USA. It sits at the beginning of the park-like area known as the Lumbini Development Zone next to the Maya Devi Temple. The zone contains numerous Buddhist temples and monasteries built by various countries.
The Maya Devi  temple sits over the spot where the Buddha (Prince Siddhartha) was born. Inside you can see the marker stone that pinpoints the spot where the Buddha was born as well as a sandstone carving of the birth of the Buddha from the 14th century. (No photos inside) The sacred pond in front is where Queen Maya Devi was said to have bathed before giving birth to the Buddha. Lumbini, Nepal.
