  • The Mariinsky Theatre is known as one of the best venues for ballet and opera in the world. The audience will be made up of a complete cross-section of society from little girls in their best dresses, with parents in the tuxedos and bow tie, through to tourists in their jeans and polo shirts. The inside of the building is stunning, very traditional and old-school. It's worth paying the 150 roubles to hire the binoculars, as it allows you to skip the queue to the cloakrooms when you return them. The chairs aren't the most comfortable though. You shouldn't visit St Petersburg without a trip to see something here - it's such a part of the cultural heritage of the city.

Great place to stay on budget

I stayed at Room7 for only one night, but would have been happy to stay longer. I had a double bedroom for myself, with a private bathroom. The room was compact but very comfortable. It was equipped with towels, flip-flops and toiletries for two, as well as a fridge and a microwave oven. The room itself was in excellent condition and very tidy as well as stylish. I was happy to find the floor was panel instead of carpet. The bathroom seemed a bit more worn and torn, but was nevertheless clean and spacious enough. The only thing that might have been an issue is soundproofing. I stayed on a weekday and was happy to find I wasn't bothered by any noise during the night, but while awake I could easily hear sounds from the corridor, so I'm quessing a light sleeper might have some interruptions on a weekend night. When calling the hotel, the person answering didn't speak English, which was quite surprising. Checking in late was no problem for the staff and I had no further issues with the service. The hotel is walking-distance from all the main sights. For this price it's a superb deal.
