About the Area Spiddal (An Spidéal) sits on the shores of Galway Bay, 18km west of Galway City, on the edge of Connemara. It’s part of the Gaeltacht, where Irish is spoken daily, although most people also speak English. All signs are in Irish. The village has its own beach -Trá an Spidéil - with views across the bay to the Burren, the Cliffs of Moher, and the Aran Islands. There are two beaches in the village, both south-facing and connected by a walking and cycling path. One is near the main road, and the other, more sheltered beach is beside the pier. The area is well-known for shore angling, especially during the mackerel season. In the village you’ll find a good selection of places to eat and drink, with live traditional music on some weekends.
