The Champlain Waterfront Hotel, an Ascend Collection Hotel

"This property definitely shows its age. There are signs of newer upgrades and renovations, but there are also plenty of reminders that this is an older, aging property. My first room was a single queen room on the third floor, and it was honestly the smallest hotel room I have ever stayed in. The room was literally just big enough to walk around the bed. It also had a very overpowering perfume/deodorizer smell. I asked the staff if it was possible to relocate, and they were very accommodating. I was moved to a two-bed room on the second floor, which was considerably larger and felt much more like a standard-sized hotel room. The shower could definitely use replacement or updating, but otherwise the room was clean and comfortable. The biggest highlight of this property is the staff. Everyone I dealt with was wonderful, friendly, and accommodating, and I really appreciated how easily they handled my request to change rooms. One thing worth knowing: despite the name, don't be fooled into expecting a waterfront hotel with waterfront views. It is only steps away from the waterfront, which is certainly convenient, but the hotel itself is not actually on the waterfront. Overall, my stay improved considerably after changing rooms. However, given the age and condition of the property, would I pay the same price to stay here again? Probably not. Overall: 3/5 — largely because of the excellent staff. Value for money: 2/5"
