Join the list of visitors, some of whom are allegedly interplanetary, to this New Mexico city and check out fantastic museums, beautiful lakes, antiques stores and wineries.

Roswell is the seat of Chaves County in southeastern New Mexico. The city became famous in 1947 when a UFO supposedly crash landed at a nearby ranch, spurring decades of conspiracy theories and legends. Roswell is more than a stop on a ufology tour, however. Discover eclectic architecture, natural reserves and art galleries in one of New Mexico’s largest cities.

Roswell’s famous UFO incident is the key theme at the International UFO Museum Research Center. Believers and skeptics enjoy this intriguing institution, which offers various theories and reports arising from the 1947 event. Watch videos of news reports from the time, as well as interviews with witnesses. Join a city UFO tour to see historical landmarks related to the infamous crash landing and stroll along the psychedelically designed Roswell Spacewalk.

Walk down Roswell’s Main Street to enjoy the city’s downtown streetscape. Architectural highlights include Chaves County Magistrate Court and the Roswell Museum and Art Center. This comprehensive museum contains a broad range of historical artifacts and a collection of southwestern art. The Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art is a cultural landmark in Roswell, while the Walker Aviation Museum honors the area’s aviation heritage. Take kids to the free-entry Spring River Park and Zoo to spot animals and ride a miniature train. Adults can enjoy the region’s wineries and antique shops.

Visit the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge to spy sandhill cranes, snow geese and other migratory birds. The visitor center has informative exhibits showing which species you may see on your drive along the 8-mile (13-kilometer) loop road. Investigate the sinkholes of Bottomless Lakes State Park, a scenic spot to camp, swim, stroll and paddle.

Fly to the Roswell International Air Center or catch one of the state’s intercity buses. Roswell is also accessible via three major highways. Enjoy a wide range of sights and attractions for all seasons. Camp under the stars near the lakes in summer or enjoy bird-watching amid the stillness of a winter sunset.

Airport feels like an abandoned place or plane graveyard. Not well maintained, weeds 2 feet tall. Couple nice areas and met a couple really nice people.

I come to Roswell and make base camp for my motorcycle riding. Love the countryside around Roswell and great Mexican food. To bad restaurants are still closed because of the Governor.

I went for scuba diving at the Bottomless Lake which is appx 30 min away driving. Diving can be exhausting but returning to Roswell, a quiet friendly town makes the difference to go back out and enjoy the town. Thank you Roswell.
