Glenwood South is a loud area and as someone who used to live in Raleigh, I should have known better. That being said, the staff here warned me upon check-in (though I had already pre-paid and so I had no real option but to stay) that it was “loud” here. I thought they meant some sort of construction. But when I got back from dinner at around 11:15 on Saturday night, it hit me what he meant.
With the relatively new exit off Capitol that runs right next to the Hampton Inn you have a lot more traffic not just on the Glenwood side but the Johnson St side too. And this would be fine any other nights but Friday and Saturday. It was nothing but loud music, drunken shouting, and cars revving their engines up until about 2am.
The hotel offers white noise machines and when you enter your room, you will notice they provide two packs of ear plugs. Neither of these items or the combination of would block out the level of noise that comes into your room. Though all that being said, if you’re in Raleigh to go out and you don't plan on sleeping until 2am, then this won’t affect you.
The hotel staff were really friendly, the parking is convenient (though getting into the lot at 11pm on a Saturday took far too long with the traffic there), people appeared to enjoy the provided breakfast, and the rooms are plenty comfortable. But take warning for weekend travel, it is incredibly loud no matter where you are in the hotel.
