Wonderful getaway

It's always a magical time visiting Whidbey Island, and Karen and Shawn's makes the visit just perfect. Beautiful view and great location. It's like going home at the end of every day, and makes it very different from going back to a hotel. I've been there a few times now and brought my fiance with me this year--he was blown away by both the Island and our lodging for the trip. A gem of a home on Whidbey!

Whidbey Island

Oak Harbor is a great location to explore the island. We weren’t at the property many hours of each day, since we wanted to go to the beaches and see the towns, Deception Pass, the Sculpture Garden and the Lighthouse. Every evening the deer and rabbits would forage on the lawn outside our unit. The unit was well equipped for making all our meals. This was particularly important for us due to severe food allergies.

Wonderful

The view, the peace and quiet and coziness of the property was everything I needed. The hosts, Karen and Shawn were so welcoming, both were always concerned about my comfort, really I felt more like family than there guest. Karen and Shawn’s property feels like a world away, yet conveniently located within minutes of shopping, sightseeing and eateries. My only regret is I did not get to take advantage of the outdoor fire pit, winter weather. I highly recommend this beautiful property to anyone looking to get away and reconnect with nature, I will be back!

Beautiful Views, Nasty Host

As promised, the views are spectacular, eagles soar outside the windows, dear graze outside the windows; also outside the windows all day long: the host's husband, walking, by peering in. The cute little fireplace pictured? Also the only source of heat which they will ask you to use sparingly when they greet you upon arrival. That may be fine for summer but not great when you've booked 2 months in the winter & it's 27° out. They also asked us to not use the brighter lights to "save money" and to only do laundry once a week & shower sparingly. If these had been eco-conscious requests, I would have understood but it was all about not costing them any money when I paid them to stay there for 2 months. Not a great start. Then we had a misunderstanding about my daughter's ESA service animal. We didn't realize we had to register the animal as staying with us. When the host realized we had a service cat with us, she flipped out, & threatened to throw us out immediately, halfway through our stay, but instead offered to charge an extra/additional cleaning fee to let us stay. We signed an agreement. A week later, we were shocked when she & her husband again came early one morning and threatened to throw us out again because, unbeknownst to us, our car had supposedly leaked a fluid on her driveway. After calling customer service to ask if this was even allowed, she retaliated by evicting us the next evening, one month early, no where to go, in the rain, with no refund! She was rude, nasty, and abusive--even telling my daughter that she (the host) didn't have time to "laze around all day in bed" like her, despite having been told of her disabilities, chronic pain & fatigue and that she was "sick of us" despite having only met us 4 times (unlike her husband whom we ran into daily). Guests beware. If you don't mind having these people peering in the windows at all times and making strange demands, then you might enjoy your stay. We, obviously, did not!

We are very surprised that you are able to write a review as you were evicted due to noncompliance of house rules. Let us take your comments point by point. We NEVER walk by the windows of the unit when we have guests. There are blinds to ensure guest privacy. Next, we have 3 heaters for the unit, not one. We have NEVER asked any guests to restrict use of heat, electricity, or water. The reason for the eviction (the very first time in 12 years of hosting that this has happened) is that you smuggled a pet into a pet-free home. I am allergic to cats and further, want to offer a pet-free experience to my guests. Emotional support animals (e.g., cats that do not have any specific task training related to a disability) are exempt from the service animal policy regardless of whether or not you disclosed having it. This is the reason that VRBO evicted you. Also, we offered to let you complete your stay if you would board your cat with nearby family, but you refused. These guests are very disgruntled as they were caught breaking their contract. Please see all our other honest reviews to get a true sense of the kind of hosts that we are.

Awesome!

Our stay here was fabulous! The hosts are wonderful people. The neighbors are very friendly. It was quiet with an occasional Navy fighter jet flying by, which I love. The jets were not noisy enough to deter us from ever going back. The view! What can I say. Waking up every morning to an incredible water view was amazing. The weather was in the 70's. It was perfect!

Beautiful and Peaceful Studio

So many wonderful things I could say about Karen's lovely studio. We had many lovely mornings and evenings relaxing on the private porch, enjoying the beautiful view of the sound with a mountain backdrop. The space was just what we needed, with its open and spacious layout and full kitchen. There were lots of useful guidebooks and other helpful Whidbey Island materials thoughtfully included. Karen and Shawn were super responsive and kind. Loved every minute.

Magnificent View

This is a beautiful area! The view is stunning! The rental was just right for our needs. We didn't want to leave. And hope to return. Our host was very welcoming. It was just wonderful!

Quiet neighborhood, view of the water

The property is a large studio in the daylight basement of a house. There is a little bit of noise when the owners walk around upstairs but not much. They were very responsive to our questions/needs. The neighborhood is nice for walking and the location is central on Whidbey Island for exploring. Our primary purpose of the visit was to escape the fireworks insanity in Auburn, Washington. Although were were a few prior to the 4th and a fair amount on the 4th itself, it was nothing compared to Auburn. We enjoyed our visit and sites around Whidbey Island.

Fantastic place! Don't miss

We stayed here for a little over two months and were completely spoiled. The pictures don't do it justice - beautiful sunrises, wildlife, excellent kitchen. This is a perfect space for one or two. I also worked remotely for 2 months and had access to a desk and WiFi. Thank you so much to Shawn and Karen for their hospitality and hosting. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Beautiful views but…

After booking our stay I reached out to Karen a few weeks before arrival about extending our stay for a week. She was more than happy to accommodate, but a few days prior to arrival she asked me if we could come at least a day later and I told her I was unable to do so since plane tickets were already bought. After our arrival there were issues with the payment for the second week of our stay. Karen approached me and I was more than happy to make it right. She then stated that instead of paying we could just leave then, a whole week early. I told her that she approved our stay for the extra week and I was more than happy to pay and I could not leave because of my husbands deployment. The last night of our stay Karen came down and was asking what time I would be leaving the next day. I told her I would be leaving around 9, she then again asked if I could leave earlier because of guest coming in that day. I told her no, because of my flight time and checkout wasn’t until 11am so I was already leaving before then. I felt as if it was uncalled for to have asked multiple times if we could come late and to leave early when she approved our dates to stay. At times there was also a small lack of privacy, but the view and location are great.

Oak Harbor Scenic Heights

Everything here was excellent! Beautiful view of Saratoga Passage right out back! Great location on Whidbey Island. This studio apartment was spotless and had every possible amenity one could want. Very comfortable bed and awesome shower! Many small creatures such as deer and rabbits hanging out in beautiful property. Everything exceeded my expectations!

Whidbey’s Best Kept secret - part 2

We just loved Shawn and Karen as our hosts. They had a new king size fire pit this year, and it was fun in every way to meet their neighbors and talk and laugh. One of the neighbors even came to our rescue when our car broke down ! Their Saratoga view is still incredible (we stayed with them last summer), the eagles whirl in the air currents, the sunsets are so beautiful, the deer and rabbits come out and near the condo most every day, boats glide by in the channels. We were so able to totally relax there, sit in the sun and shade, read, or go tour the island, discovering new restaurants and magnificent vistas. All in all, a magical place - it gets our highest rating !

Great Way to Wake Up!

The morning view was a great way to start each day. While I was fortunate enough to have great weather for most days of my stay, but even on the few cloudy days it was breathtaking. The studio apartment was the perfect place to stay during my two weeks of workshops nearby. Clean, well-appointed accommodations and helpful friendly hosts.

A Month of Perfect

There are not any words to describe my stay other than "perfect". Karen and Shawn are two of the most kind and caring people I have met. I was warmly welcomed and felt welcome during my entire stay which was a month long. Karen and Shawn have struck the perfect balance between checking that I had everything I need and providing me with my own space. The studio apartment was immaculate with no detail left unseen. The apartment is technically a studio. I had everything I could possibly need and then some. I woke up every morning to an absolutely beautiful view to start my day peacefully and welcomed me home when I returned. I've never seen anything like it. I will very much miss Karen and Shawn and the place that was my home for over a month. I hope to return to the Island and when I do my first call without hesitation will be to Karen and Shawn and even if the studio was already booked I'd make time to stop by to see my new friends.. Thank you so much for all of your kindness and making my stay absolutely perfect.

I wish I could live here year round! The property, the view the attention to detail...nothing missed

It was easy to communicate with Karen and Shawn. The studio was very clean and uncluttered, spacious, well appointed from towels, sheets, extra area heaters, kitchen supplies. Fantastic view and comfortable surroundings

We enjoyed our 12 day stay. Karen and Shawn were friendly and responsive. The downstairs unit is spacious for a studio, full of light with a great porch view of the water and mountains. Enjoyed many long walks in the vicinity (coastal farmland) as well as lots of great hikes around Whidbey Island. Due to COVID we didn’t spend time shopping but enjoyed some great take out in Oak Harbor, especially halibut and chips from Seabolts. Overall a great time and we would definitely book here again.

Truly great stay

The view is simply stunning. The unit is very comfortable, spacious, clean, well-provided, plenty of good books, wi-fi was first rate, ground floor made everything easier, the owners Shawn and Karen were beyond helpful and just fun to know and talk to. Deer with their fawns showed up frequently, and it felt good to walk barefoot in the grass right beyond the large and comfortable porch. I loved this place, and it is really difficult to leave - it became home so easily !

Very pleasant getaway

We were lucky to find such a lovely place on short notice. The large property is situated near state parks and beaches but we needed a car for most activities. Thank you to the owners who put a lot of care into their home and vacation rental.

Just as described!

Karen and her husband are extremely nice and made sure we had everything we needed! Their property is exactly how it is described. They were very understanding when my husband and I had to leave just over a week early due to his orders, and were kind enough to refund us part of our money back. The view is amazing! It was such a nice and relaxing location for the two of us!

Great home base

My husband and I wanted a home base to relax in the evenings after hiking and adventuring all day. We would leave every morning and come back in the evening. The place was easy to get to, wonderful views, and easily big enough for the two of us. The bathroom could get a little chilly but the rest of the unit was fine. Karen did a good job decorating and checking on us almost daily. I probably would have cooked more if there had been a dishwasher but I knew there was not one when I booked the place. My husband and I were able to relax and enjoy the mornings and evenings spent in Karen's place. An added touch was the hiking book that she allowed us to use while there. It was very helpful.

Amazing stay

I stayed here for about 3 months and it was nothing short of amazing! The land owners were very polite and always asked me a schedule for them to start yard work or always let me know if they were doing any work days in advance. The bed was the best bed I’ve every slept in and the full kitchen was great because I had to cook my own meals! They have everything from a potato peeler to a pasta strainer! Bathroom was clean and shower was spotless! Full washer and dryer was great for me! Now waking up to such a beautiful view of the bay every morning and not to mention most days the week their are deer and rabbit not 50 feet from your door is amazing. Own personal parking down below with more than enough room! Overall just an amazing stay!

WAY better than the pictures

The pictures don't give this property enough justice. I have ZERO complaints. Karen and her husband, Shawn are super welcoming and friendly, without being overbearing. They were always easy to reach and approachable. Karen phoned a few days before my scheduled arrival to touch-base on where to park and to make sure I knew how to get there. About the property: -They turned their downstairs into a private, separate living space/studio. -The studio has it's own driveway to park your car and your own private entrance. - The view is refreshing and breathtaking. It's an unobstructed view of the water! - The first thing I noticed about the studio is how clean it is. It is spotless, flows well and isn't crowded with unnecessary things. I'm very sensitive about odors and this place just had the fresh air of the outdoors/water coming through. - The studio is SPACIOUS. They've thought of everything for the kitchen: stove, oven, microwave, a large refrigerator + freezer. There's plenty of counter space and a dining table. -I appreciated the desk: I'm a student, and I was able to set up my laptop and an extra monitor to do all my work. - The bathroom is LARGE. I was grateful for the large counter space in the bathroom; I could spread my stuff out and it was nice to be able to have my things off the floor. - The bed was comfortable and warm. - The neighborhood was quiet. You can't hear anything living downstairs/no problem with too much noise. HIGHLY recommend this place!

There is so much beauty and quietness around here. The property is big and full of woodland creatures. It overlooks the Saratoga Pass and the mountains behind. The studio apt. is very comfy and private. It has made the time fly by while we wait for our house to be built.

Great Stay

I loved my stay at this home. The only thing that could've made it better was a different bed. It was too hard and I had back problems the entire stay but I didn't let that stop me. It was so peaceful looking out at the water, watching the sailboats and the sunrises were spectacular. If they got a new bed, I would definitely stay there again. The owners, Sean and Karen, were great. Thanks!

Whidbey Island Retreat

This is a quiet location tucked back with an amazing view of Penn Cove... I traveled for work but was able to sneak in quite a bit of fun on Whidbey Island. Proprietors are unobtrusive however I did feel guilty with all our comings and goings as I myself am a night owl.

Wonderful Whidbey getaway

It comes equipped with a full kitchen, full W/D, a fireplace, storage space (to keep your suitcases out of sight), a patio with a great view, and a spacious floor plan. I spent three and a half months here and found it to be incredibly comfortable. The location is perfect--it is between Oak Harbor and Coupeville, so it's a short drive to everything: Deception Pass, the Port Townsend Ferry, Ebey's Landing, etc. The view is stunning as well. The windows in the apartment face east, so you can see the sunrise from the bed, kitchen, living area, and patio. Rabbits, deer, and other wildlife were daily visitors in the yard, and on a good day, you might see a grey whale swimming through the Saratoga Passage. Karen and Shawn were really nice people, and great landlords too. Every time I saw them, they asked if I needed anything. They were also always ready to offer suggestions for restaurants and attractions on the island. I cannot wait to visit Whidbey Island again, at which time, I will definitely reserve my lodging at Oak Bay Studio. Thank you, Karen and Shawn! My stay was absolutely 5 stars!

Amazing!

Karen and Sean are amazing host! Quick to help and answer any questions you may have and will check on you on occasion to see how you are doing without being overbearing. The space you have, starting with parking. You can easily fit four vehicles in the driveway that is given to you for the rental. The yard is big! I have three daughters and they would play outside all day. Karen owns the book store on Pioneer and can give you some great recommendations for books if you're big on reading and, even if you're not the rental has a lot of books inside that are all great reads. The view is breathtaking and will hit you with a huge sense of calm. My daughters loved the wild life that you'll see here. Ranging from deer, rabbits, Bald eagles, seagulls, and a mix of others and with the set of binoculars that are a part of the rental you will see more. Sean will let you know of events going on around town or great places to take the family for sight seeing, picnics, or just walks. The rental and owners are amazing, I would recommend this place and by extension Karen and Sean to everyone.

Nice view but with drawbacks

The view from the property is beautiful and the studio is well equipped, but the bed was incredibly uncomfortable. We left a week ago and are still in pain from the mattress. We were really cold as well because the studio does not have its own heating. Thankfully Karen brought us a space heater that worked well. The major drawback from this trip was Karen's unwillingness to communicate with us. The power in the basement went out on us late one night and we couldn't figure it out... we finally decided to call her and she answered, but when we tried to call back because we were still sitting there in the dark, she had her phone turned off. I tried to call her prior to the trip to ask about having a package mailed and she would not answer or return my calls. I called after we left with a question and left a message and she would not return the call either. All in all the trip was not awful but there were definitely problems. I hope in the future Karen is willing to cater to her guests a little better because that lack of communication really put a damper on our honeymoon.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review. Yes, everyone loves the scenery! In response to your comments we have added a memory foam mattress topper. We also have an additional new heater in the bathroom. As to your comments on communication, I am either at my home (seconds away), or at my store (phone number displayed in unit), or by email through the VRBO site. Also, as you know, any "extras" (blender,crab cooking utensils) are quickly made available. Thanks for staying with us!

Hope to return

I stayed for 7 days it is a very nice quiet place has a very nice view of the ocean not too far town close to everything you possibly think of Karen is very friendly and I would love to return. it even had enough room to have my 2 kids and there family's over for dinner.

Cozy apt with excellent view!

I stayed here for 4 months for a work assignment. The apartment is cozy and the kitchen stocked with the essentials, and you can't beat the view! I would definitely recommend to those looking to explore whidbey island and the surrounding area

Outstanding vacation location

We loved sharing Karen's home in her lower level studio apartment. The view was breathtaking, and the location so serene and peaceful. Whidbey Island is a great vacation location for anyone looking for peace and quiet and small town America. Karen's studio is outstanding.
