Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ Tours

Two music venues in one present enthralling live performances in a modern artistic palace, looking out over the waters of Amsterdam’s scenic IJ river.

Experience dazzling acoustics that bring the highs and lows of contemporary music to life at the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ. Hear contemporary classical, electronic, jazz and world music in a unique waterfront setting.

Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ (music building on the IJ) is more than a concert venue: it’s a cultural center dedicated to interesting contemporary music of all genres. It is also an award-winning architectural design with excellent acoustics.

Cross the water on the spectacular footbridge. Look for a gigantic glass box covered by a huge concrete slab that juts out over the water. Danish architect Kim Nielsen is prized for his innovative work on this remarkable and imposing modern building. The interior is highly customizable, with movable walls, ceiling and furniture. The clarity and beauty of this design seems to fit perfectly with the exquisite sounds of the orchestra.

The building’s 725-seat auditorium is the heart of the building. Next door is a second, smaller auditorium. Look for the unique Huygens-Fokker 31-tone equal-tempered organ. Constructed in 1950, it’s a curiosity in itself. The Huygens-Fokker company has its headquarters in the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, from which it promotes and fosters the art of creating microtonal music.

Jazz lovers will head for the smaller black box jutting out of the side of the Muziekgebouw. This is a cozy podium venue called Bimhuis. It attracts big names, but maintains its intimate and friendly atmosphere.

Buy your tickets for shows and concerts online, over the phone or at the onsite box offices. If you are interested in architecture, take a 2-hour tour of Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, which includes a lunch in at Bimhuis’ on-site café with river and city views.

Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ is within a short walking distance from Centraal Station and is a stop on two tram lines. If you ride or drive here, park your bike or car for a fee in the secure spots in the basement. The garage is shared with the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam.
