The principality of Monaco is a glamorous resort that attracts the rich and famous. The second smallest country in the world, after Vatican City, covers an area of just 0.75 square miles (1.95 square kilometers). It is here that Hollywood actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainer III and became Princess Grace of Monaco. Find palaces, museums, gardens and casinos as you stroll along its streets.
During the summer, explore the state apartments and Throne Room of the Prince’s Palace, home to the ruling Grimaldi family. Arrive just before noon to watch the Changing of the Guard ceremony. The palace entry ticket also includes admission to the Napoleon Museum next door. See the tombs of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace at Monaco Cathedral and admire the 19th-century building's Byzantine ornamentation.
Spend an enjoyable couple of hours at Port Hercule looking at the multimillion dollar yachts. Then go for a scenic stroll in the Princess Grace Rose Garden, where there are thousands of roses, olive trees and a lake. Other flower-filled green spaces in Monaco include St. Martin Gardens and Princess Antoinette Park.
Monaco also has a small number of child-friendly attractions, including beaches, the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco and the Zoological Garden of Monaco.
Visit Monaco’s most exclusive district, Monte Carlo, where the most luxurious and fashionable hotels, restaurants and boutiques can be found. Have lunch on the terrace of the Café de Paris and visit the Grand Casino.
Attend the Formula One Grand Prix in May when the narrow streets are turned into a race circuit for some of the world’s fastest racing drivers.
If you are not arriving by luxurious yacht or cruise ship, fly into the international airport at Nice, about 13 miles (20 kilometers) along the coast in France. Monaco is so small that walking is the most convenient way to get around. There are street elevators to help people navigate the steep inclines.
Monaco is glamor, excitement and lavish relaxation.
