Kunsthalle Bremen

Kunsthalle Bremen showing interior views and art

See 600 years of European art in this landmark cultural institution, which has a 19th-century façade flanked by two modern wings along Bremen’s ancient walls.

Kunsthalle Bremen is the city’s premier art gallery and showcases a stunning survey of European and international art from the Renaissance to today. Peruse 14th-century paintings, works by impressionist masters, significant modernist pieces and an impressive collection of contemporary media art. With a façade that contrasts the mid-19th century with the sleek cubic design of the 21st century, Kunsthalle Bremen is a museum with diverse appeal on the banks of the city’s medieval moat.

Enter the building’s dignified neoclassical main entrance and make your way through the museum’s comprehensive collections. You’ll see magnificent works from 19th- and 20th-century France, the Netherlands and Germany, including paintings by Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet and Paul Cézanne. French romantic and German expressionist works are also on display.

See the museum’s collection of prints and drawings, which encompasses 200,000 artworks spanning the 15th to the 20th centuries. Edgar Degas and Albrecht Dürer are among the artists in this collection.

Don’t miss exploring the museum’s modern wings, which have a distinctive and geometric design. You’ll see contemporary works in the museum’s media collection, including pieces by John Cage, Olafur Eliason and Nam Jun Paik. Find out what’s on display in the museum’s temporary exhibition galleries too.

Explore Kunsthalle Bremen’s galleries with an English-language audio guide, which you can rent for a small fee. Take a break and have a meal or a tasty snack at the museum’s restaurant, which is located in its southern wing. The museum store stocks a wide range of art books and souvenirs.

Kunsthalle Bremen is located on Bremen’s Culture Mile, a stretch of museums and cultural institutions that follows Am Wall, the ancient city ramparts. Add the museum to your walking tour of Am Wall and see 19th-century monuments, spacious parks and the Bremen Theater. Alternatively, reach the museum by bus or tram. Kunsthalle Bremen is closed on Mondays, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Ticket prices include admission to the museum’s collection. Temporary exhibitions may have additional fees.
