The space
If the dates you would like to book are not available on the calendar, don't despair, send us a quick message and we'll see what we can do!
Although we are currently offering 7 night stays, we may be able to accommodate you for three nights or more dependent on bookings etc, so please send a message and we will see what we can do.
The local pub is closed from October to April! However, there are plenty of other pubs in the vicinity but NOT within walking distance.
History of our home:
Built on the footprint of an 1800's fisherman's cottage, attention to detail has resulted in a unique large and comfortable home with a dash of quirkiness! The location of the house is fabulous, with unhindered views across the bay.. A few steps away and you are on the small sandy beach with rock pools and the little harbour dating from the 1830's built for the turf boats.
Design:
The lounge has unhindered views across the bay, the ceilings of the lounge and kitchen are clad with wood to the eaves, making you think that you're under an upturned boat! The floors are ancient slate flags, a large open fire stove creates a cosy ambience. There is a 'starter supply' of logs and turf on either side of the fireplace. Guests can purchase more logs/turf locally.
There are two seating areas in the lounge. The one by the fire offers a wonderful retreat of warmth & comfort in front of a roaring fire, put your feet up and relax with a beverage, have a game of backgammon or simply put the world to rights! There are two vintage leather club chairs and a two seater sofa.
The seating area by the bay window has fabulous views of the river Shannon and across to Kerry. Two large sofas, two armchairs and two rocking chairs ensure plenty of favourite spots.
In the middle of the lounge is a dining table for eight persons.
The lounge has a garret - a traditional 'attic room' that in days gone by, the spinster aunt or bachelor uncle would have used! It gives an interesting aspect to the lounge, unfortunately, access to the garret is temporarily restricted to guests.
With a music system throughout the lounge and kitchen and no neighbours - you can turn the volume up! The system has a facility for smartphones, iPhones etc to play your own music. Be sure to bring your own cables - ours seem to go on walkabout occasionally!
The kitchen is spacious with 2 x two seater sofas and a breakfast table for eight, and a high pitched wooden ceiling with fisherman lantern lights. The kitchen is well equipped for home cooking and a dishwasher makes light work of the clearing up! The flag floor - is perfect for dancing!
Both bedrooms have en-suite (wet room) shower, hand basin and toilet.
The porch is perfect to catch the sun with outside dining table and chairs. The garden is purposely left wild with meadow flowers, Yellow Flags, Marshallow trees, Monbretia, Wild Fuschia and other native plants & flowers including the 'rogue' weeds! Note to any enthusiastic gardeners - due to the proximity to the water and the expanse of garden, its impossible to have a manicured garden, it's purposely left wild.
Bath robes, towels, toiletries, beverages include tea and coffee. The welcome pack consists of soda bread, scones, milk and butter. If you have any dietary requirements i.e. soy milk, gluten free, vegan etc.. please let us know before you arrive to ensure your welcome pack is satisfactory.
There's a good supply of books, Backgammon, Scrabble, playing cards etc., nothing nicer than sitting in front of a turf fire curled up with a good book, hot chocolate or glass of wine.
Hygge (pronounced hue-guh not hoo-gah) is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cosy, charming or special...In Ireland the word is CLUTHAR! And we have plenty of Cluthar!!
Guest access
Your access is throughout the house and grounds with the exception of the garret (loft) in the lounge.
There is a small beach and rock pools filled with baby mussels, sea anemones & other curios.
Other things to note
The local pub is closed from October through to April. There are other local pubs but you would need a car to get there, unless you like a lot of walking (approx 4miles).
