Otways Loft - Train & Tree House : Forrest
Otways Loft – A Cabin Unlike Any Other, Forrest
The Space
It’s hard to imagine another building quite like this.
Otways Loft is a three-storey cabin hand-built from mountain ash logs and salvaged vintage train carriage parts — the creation of timber designer Michael Patterson, who spent years crafting every joint, panel and detail by hand. Salvaged church flooring, locally felled timber, train carriage doors that slide open to morning light.
It’s the kind of place that stops people in their tracks the moment they walk in — and then keeps revealing itself. A detail you missed yesterday. A view that shifts with the light.
Featured in Better Homes & Gardens, The Design Files, Postcards, Country Style and publications in Sweden and the Netherlands — Otways Loft has earned its reputation. But no photograph quite prepares you for it.
This is a place that rewards guests who appreciate craft, character and the kind of stay that doesn’t need to be filled with noise. If that sounds like you, you’ll love it here.
Sleeping
The master bedroom on the second storey features a king bed and a freestanding claw-foot bath with treetop views.
The Hemingway Room sleeps up to three, with a balcony perfect for morning coffee.
The White Room sits on the ground level, with a queen bed tucked behind a sliding train carriage door that opens to the deck.
And above it all — up the permanent ladder — the Loft itself, with a double futon ideal for older kids or the more adventurous.
In total, the house sleeps up to eight.
The Kitchen and Living
The kitchen is fully equipped and well-loved by guests — large oven, stove, microwave, dishwasher, Italian-style coffee maker, French press and pantry essentials.
The open plan kitchen, living and dining space — anchored by the wood-fired heater — is one of our favourite places to cook and gather. There’s a piano, Bluetooth speaker, books and board games. No television — and guests tell us they love it. Some stream on their own devices, but most find they simply stop needing to.
The deck overlooks the garden with lounge furniture, and the yard has outdoor dining and a hammock. Koalas have been spotted from right here. Wombats, wallabies, kangaroos and echidnas are regular visitors too.
FORREST AND THE OTWAYS
Forrest is a beautiful, quietly unhurried timber town — the kind of place that’s become harder to find. It sits on the edge of 100,000 hectares of national park, alive with birdsong and wildlife, and that is genuinely its greatest asset.
Otways Loft has direct ride-in ride-out access to over 70km of world-class singletrack across 36 trails — the Forrest Mountain Bike Trail Network is considered one of Australia’s top mountain biking destinations, with trails for every level from easy to challenging. It’s right on the doorstep. Forrest MTB Hire is open for bookings every day except Sunday — we recommend booking ahead or texting Michelle for last-minute availability.
Bush walks, waterfalls, Lake Elizabeth, Stevensons Falls and the Barwon River Reservoir are all within easy reach. The General Store is open daily, and Jen at Bodysmith — a beautiful little healing studio offering hot stone massage and Bowen therapy — is just a short walk from the Loft.
A note worth knowing — Regional Victoria is doing it tough at the moment and some businesses operate with reduced or changing hours. We do our best to stay across local openings and share the most up-to-date recommendations before your stay, though in a small regional town things can shift day to day. It’s all part of the slower rhythm here. The Loft is thoughtfully set up as a self-sufficient retreat — and guests who come prepared to cook, explore and unwind tend to have the best time.
Thirty minutes from Lorne and the Great Ocean Road. Twenty minutes from Birregurra.
Hosting Style
We’re Fleur, Mike and the team behind Dufflebird Getaways — with over twenty years of hosting across Regional Victoria, and a deep connection to the Otways Loft, which holds a very special place for us.
We care deeply about this space, and it tends to resonate most with guests who value character, detail and a slower, more considered stay. Over the years, that shared appreciation has made hosting here something really special.
Before you arrive, you’ll receive our local guide, and we’re always happy to help shape your time — whether that’s mountain biking, walking, long lunches or simply switching off. We’re responsive if you need us, and have a trusted local team nearby for anything in person — otherwise, we’ll leave you completely to your stay.
Many of our guests return, which we think says everything.
Character around every corner. We hope you love it as much as we do.
Combining with Steam Carriage
The original vintage train carriage next door — Steam — is a separate Dufflebird property. When booked independently, both remain completely private. When booked together, they open up to accommodate larger groups of 10–12 (up to 14 at maximum). We recommend booking early if you’re hoping to secure both.
Guest Access
The entire house and grounds are yours for the duration of your stay — including the deck, outdoor dining area, lounge furniture and hammock.
Linen and towels are provided — just bring your beach towels. Beds are made up to your preferences; just let us know in advance.
Dogs are welcome — please let us know before you arrive. We ask that dogs stay off furniture and beds and leave the house trace-free, so that every guest — including those with allergies — arrives to a fresh, clean space. A small dedicated dog run is available on the balcony, with a bed and bowl provided.
No smoking inside and no candles, please.
A Note on Pricing
Otways Loft is a large property to prepare, and our pricing is structured to suit both couples and larger groups. The base rate covers up to four guests, with an additional $50 per night per guest thereafter. If you need to adjust guest numbers after booking, just let us know and we’ll take care of it.

Excellent house where we stayed with 2 families for 3 days. The overall lay-out suited us very well, and the living room with a piano, a fire place, and no TV made a wonderful change to a typical evening at home.
Beautifully presented, spotlessly clean and wonderfully cosy. It’s clear that the host has considered so many details from a guests point of view. We felt very welcome and we loved the quirky, cosy vibe. Thank you so much Fleur, we would recommend your place to anyone.
Absolutely Stunning, Stylish and Refreshing. So glad we stayed here!!
Absolutely Stunning, Stylish and Refreshing. A very unique property, with many quirks. Massive and beautifully kept yard and deck. We are so glad we stayed here!! We had a ball.
What a great weekend, a fabulous location, right near all that Forrest has to offer. We rode our bikes, ate at the Brewery and enjoyed the gorgeous accommodation. It had everything a family needs. No TV but that ended up being a blessing in disguise. We took our little fur baby as well and she loved the big yard.

We felt a little bit special to be able to stay here...
The house itself was amazing - interesting to look at and I felt a little bit special to be able to stay there. It was so comfortable and warm, everywhere!
The kitchen was friendly to use, plenty of room to move and meant we didn't need to forage out of doors.
Everything was easy - chopping wood, having a shower, going to bed, cooking dinner, beds were comfortable and warm.
It was a great place to catch up (and everyone thinks I'm pretty good at finding such a great place to stay, but you deserve that credit!)

Otway delight
Fabulous unique and interesting cottage in the heart of Forrest. From when we booked, to our departure, Fleur could not have been more helpful as a host. It had all the amenities we needed for a great weekend away with the girls. Walking distance to the pub, the brewery, the general store, platypi chocolate and many of the beautiful Otway trails for walking or riding. We also booked a platypus evening tour to Lake Elizabeth which was well worth it. Highly recommend Otway Loft for a trip away.
The loft is unique well appointed accommodation. Everything was pretty seamless really. The kids spent about an hour looking for a hidden TV (I let them . knew there wasn’t one which is a big positive)

Beautiful house in a great location.
Myself and 5 friends have recently enjoyed a fabulous weekend staying in Otways Loft. This house is just as described, in fact even better!
It is a unique collection of repurposed building materials, a thoughtful and clever mix of retro and vintage furniture that combine to make for a very cool pad. Every room has it own unique charm with beautiful natural light and very comfortable beds. The house was beautifully presented and equiped with everything from Kitchen Aid to board games , you won't want for anything.
If you don't feel like cooking the house is a short walk to the local Brewery, Bespoke Restaurant and the General store all of which we tried and would highly recommend.
We did make use of the bikes which was great but, they where in need of a little TLC, so if you are a keen mountain biker you would want to bring your own.
Thank you Fleur for sharing your Forrest treasure.
I will definitely be back, next time with husband and kids in tow.
Excellent location to experience all the Otways have to offer.
From the great Forrest General Store to all the mountain biking trails and convenience of Lorne, Apollo Bay and more - this property allows you to do it all
We found Otway Loft so beautiful and relaxing! Everything we needed was supplied, from great coffee, plenty of wood for the fire & even our dog was thought of with treats waiting on her outside bed on arrival! Quality local products were used throughout the property, which smelled divine and the linen was 5 star hotel standard. Located close to so many beautiful spots to explore, or to read a book inside, we felt so comfortable for our entire trip. Fleur’s communication was excellent and provided all the information needed for such a wonderful break. Thank you for a lovely, memorable stay
Fantastic property. We loved our stay. It was right on the edge of many walks and not too far to travel to others.
Shops are limited so take what you will need food wise but afew take away options and a pub also. The peace and quiet was wonderful
We stayed at the loft for over 2 weeks. It was the perfect salve after the year that was 2020 within a friendly local community. We made the 35 minute drive to Skenes for a wave almost daily, and enjoyed many a day trip further afield. Lots of bush and waterfall walking. The rustic house with its vintage decor felt a little luxurious with lovely linen and super comfy beds. We enjoyed the great oven and kitchen set-up (with teapot which is always a nice touch), terrific shower and wood fire. The pantry was generously stocked with many basic items. Joyous birdlife and noisy possums were totally welcome. Determined mozzies hampered our ability to exploit more fully, the rambling garden setting and deck, but the balcony was the perfect spot to sit under a starlit sky. A great start to our year.
A very memorable experience - the house was quirky and interesting as well as being comfortable and quite luxurious. The bath in the upstairs bedroom is so relaxing because you can see out over greenery and hear the rain on the tin roof. Great kitchen for cooking too. Our kids loved playing and using their imaginations there - a very inspiring place to stay!
A great getaway for children, a great outdoor area to run around and close to many scenic bush walks. The Loft is well presented and clean. Would highly recommend.
We stayed as two families to enjoy the mountain biking around Forrest. The house was very clean and had everything we needed including some children's toys and books. Lots of space for both our young families and fantastic location in Forrest. Walking distance for the kids to the shop, us to the pub and down to the river and biking tracks.
We had some vehicle breakdown issues and Fleur went above and beyond to help us.
Would highly recommend.
We had a lovely time at the Otways Loft:
- cups of tea on the deck in the sunshine
- drinks on the upstairs balcony at sunset
- cooked up a storm in the well appointed kitchen
- chatted by the cosy fire
The perfect ingredients for an amazing weekend to celebrate a couple of special birthdays!
Amazing architectural feat (much of which is constructed with authentic old train features) set upon sprawling garden with huge trees and a hammock as the icing on the cake!
Beautiful & super comfortable accommodation with every convenience attended to.
Very late checkout was granted (at no extra cost to us!), to accomodate those of us participating in local cycling event.
Wouldn't stay anywhere else for future visits to Forrest!!
Thank you to our lovely host!
Pleasant and cosy stay for our little family (2 adults 2 children and a pup)
Comfortable and well equipped accommodation to base our otways exploring from. Our family enjoyed the unique spaces inside and outside. It was a treat to bring our pup along for the trip as well.
We loved the loft house! It was perfect to catch up with friends over a glass of wine next to a cosy wood heater. The kitchen is so well set up. The beds are comfy and rooms so thoughtfully decorated. Loved the shower too.
Fleur’s communication was great before and during our stay. Even though it rained most of the weekend we could easily walk around town ducking into the retro second hand shop, jewellery gallery, op shop, general store and art studio. The dinner and beer tasting at the Brewery was fun. Thanks for letting us stay.
What an amazing property!! So much character, charm and uniqueness. We had a wonderful time enjoying the local beauty of the Otways, and loved coming “home” to the loft. Such a homely, welcoming place to stay. Thank you Fleur for making our stay so memorable.
