California Lighthouse

California Lighthouse which includes general coastal views
This iconic lighthouse has been a fixture on the island for more than 100 years. Climb to the top at sunset to enjoy romantic views of the coast.

The tall, white column of the historic California Lighthouse is one of the most iconic landmarks on the island. Take a guided tour to learn about the history of the lighthouse and to climb the narrow 120-plus steps to the top for fabulous 360-degree views.

The lighthouse was designed by a French architect and was erected between 1914 and 1916. It takes its name from the SS California, a ship that had been wrecked off the coast nearby back in 1861. Ever since it was constructed, the lighthouse has cast its trademark warning light onto the sea, helping ships navigate the treacherous coast.

Visit the lighthouse independently or as part of a guided tour. Opt for the latter and listen as an knowledgeable guide relates the history of the monument. Be sure to bring your camera as the lighthouse’s elevated northern position affords wonderful views of the island’s west coast. Some guided tours include access to the top of the lighthouse, accessible via a steep staircase. As you gaze out across the coast, try to spot the landscaped lawns of the Tierra del Sol golf course directly to the south.

While visiting the lighthouse, take a detour to the adjacent California Sand Dunes. Not only are the dunes a popular spot for a stroll, but they are also beloved by children, who can often be seen sliding down their slopes.

Find the California Lighthouse at the northernmost tip of the island. The lighthouse is a popular stop-off for tour groups. Independent visitors who want to climb to the top of the structure will have to pay a fee. For a special romantic moment, arrange a private viewing for you and your significant other, during which you’ll have the whole observatory deck to yourselves. The best time to come is at sunset, when the sinking sun casts a stunning orange glow on the Caribbean Sea.

fun to climb the steps to see out of the light house. They are steep and you need to be comfortable coming down steep steps.

Quick drive. Recommend driving all the way to the top and parking. It was a steep climb to the top of the lighthouse but do it. Cost was $5.
