Plummet down the slopes of Alyeska Ski Resort, where runs of varying difficulty come with the promise of panoramic views. The resort, in the middle of Chugach State Park, provides thrilling skiing and snowboarding in winter, with 76 named trails to enjoy. Visit in spring and summer to see the mountains of southern Alaska in a different light and to participate in a variety of outdoor activities.
Experience a ski resort that was created entirely out of love for the sport. Alyeska is a successful skiing destination today because of the efforts of 11 locals, who raised money to buy the land for it in 1954.
Intermediate skiers can revel in the long but accessible peak-to-creek runs. Follow trails such as the Von Imhof and the Klondike, gliding from the top of the tramway to the bottom without ever hitting a black-diamond run.
Seasoned skiers come to Alyeska to tackle the North Face, which features one of North America’s longest double-diamond runs. Carve through powder on unmarked routes down bowls or brave the steep journey across High Traverse.
Once in the valley, sample different winter sports. Try Nordic skiing across the landscape or ride a dogsled into the woods.
Return to Alyeska once the snows have melted for exhilarating summer activities. Explore some of the area’s cultural activities, such as the Roundhouse at Alyeska Museum, halfway up the mountain. It charts the area’s history. The Girdwood Center for the Visual Arts displays work by local artists, while the Crow Creek Mine offers a glimpse into life for 19th-century miners.
Ride the Alyeska Aerial Tram to the top of the mountain for a scenic journey through Chugach State Park. Bring binoculars and try to spot moose and bears. Hike along the North Face Trail or follow the Winner Creek Trail for a less demanding route through the forest. Alyeska Bike Park offers activities for those who want to travel on two wheels.
Fly to the small airport in Girdwood. The nearest major airport is Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, which welcomes flights from around the U.S.
