  • Joseph Winthrop Holley, born in 1874 to former slaves in Winnsboro, South Carolina, founded the institution in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute. W. E. B. Du Bois inspired Holley to return to the South after he read Du Bois's writings on the plight of Albany's blacks in The Souls of Black Folk. Holley relocated to Albany to start a school. With the help of a $2,600 gift from the Hazard family, Holley organized a board of trustees and purchased 50 acres (200,000 m2) of land for the campus, all within a year. The aim of the institution at the time was to provide elementary education and teacher training for the local Black population. It was turned over to the state of Georgia in 1917 as Georgia Normal and Agricultural College, a two-year agricultural and teacher-training institution. In 1932, the school became part of the University System of Georgia and in 1943 it was granted four-year status and renamed Albany State College. The transition to four-year status heavily increased the school's enrollment. In 1981 the college offered its first graduate program, a prelude to the school being upgraded to university status in 1996.

We had a fantastic stay and didn’t want to leave. The place is very clean and we enjoyed sitting outside on the bar deck by the pool in the mornings listening to the birds. It’s very peaceful and the yard is beautifully kept. Inside there were video games to keep us entertained. The bedrooms and bath are well appointed and comfortable. The owner clearly cares about the details and it shows. We’re telling our friends and family that this is the place to book! Definitely would stay here again!

The fun house!

Between the arcade games, swimming pool, indoor basketball hoop and the comfy couches, it was a was a wonderful stay! Highly recommend renting from them. The house has a wonderfully fun and comfy vibe. The hosts were easy to communicate with and that is a huge plus when renting from VRBO.

Great spot, clean house, relaxing pool, great communication.

Booked a last minute stay and the process went great. Fast communication, clean and comfortable house, relaxing pool with an awesome back patio area, and the list goes on. Neighborhood was quiet and clean and peaceful. I highly recommend.

Clean and Quiet

I was headed to Albany for a family reunion so I was looking for places to stay. I wasn’t expecting to find my grandfather’s old house available as a vrbo, but I was thrilled with how well kept the place is! It’s a fantastic house for anyone looking to relax and unwind. I really enjoyed getting to see it once more.

Needs updating

The backyard and pool are very nice and it is a great location, pretty neighborhood and close to everything. The house needs some tweaking to make it comfortable and we made suggestions to the owner. We are seniors and it has some features that might really appeal to younger families.

Celebrating College Signing

I traveled from Vermont to be in town for my son's signing ceremony for his athletic scholarship. I was looking for a comfortable home where I could spend time with my family without having to leave just to be together. This house was great for that. The pool was great, as was the outdoor area. The house itself was comfortable and clean. It was everything we needed, and after a long day of events around town, it was a great place to come back to just to relax.
