Otranto, between sea and history
Otranto was born as a Messapian center in Roman and Byzantine times later only to suffer the Aragonese, of which significant traces remain with the presence of the great castle, around which the whole city has developed over time.
The historic center of Otranto is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, and in its streets and alleys you can breathe the scent of the history that characterized it.
In the 15th century Otranto was attacked by the Turkish fleet, which found the resistance of the Otranto people, who decided not to give in to the request for retraction made by the Muslims, who in response killed 800 people on the Colle della Minerva, those who today represent the holy martyrs of Otranto , whose remains are preserved in the beautiful Norman Cathedral of Otranto.
In the same Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata, you can see the largest mosaic in Italy, the Tree of Life, which extends along the aisles, made by the monk Pantaleone.
