  • Located in Niles, this quaint cottage is a dream. The 15 acres offer trails, volleyball, basketball disc golf, alpacas and a flower farm. The studio bungalow sleeps 6 comfortably in a queen bed with a wood burner, heater, heated blankets. There is also a comfie futon sofa and additional air bed as needed! Guests will feel right at home. The heating ensures a comfortable stay no matter the weather. Your site includes a kitchenette with outdoor dining space, a fire ring with a starter load of wood and hammock. Your private bathroom is on site, just steps away! *Running water is available April - October, weather depending. Drinking water and ice is provided for your first night.

Dog friendly translates to strong wet dog odor. Probably wouldn't bother dog lovers but is pretty intense for those not used to it. Make sure to toggle the expected guests when booking: despite no mention of cost differences by number of guests on Expedia, and the fact the default number is a passive default in the booking process, the owners charged us extra after we arrived for having our kids with us (we were still within the "sleeps 6" threshold). Not sure if that violates expedia' policies, but it wasn't appreciated. Not worth our time to fight it, but still annoying. Claiming the space sleeps 6 is quite a stretch, we were able to do it only because our kids are young. The futon would not fit 2 adults. And the air mattress wasn't there until we asked for it and the owners ran it over. The alpaca were disappointing as well, able to see them distant in the corner of a barn area we could not enter, but not able to see them regularly and not really a part of the experience as we expected to be a core feature. The place itself was well decorated, flowers were a nice touch, and there was attention to detail in the setup.

The weather couldn’t drown out the warm vibes.

I needed some time away from life, a patch of quiet ground and some solitude to really get re-grounded and recharged. I found it here. The host gave a friendly wave as I drove back to my little cottage. She was available as needed but left me to my own peace and quiet given that my stay went off without a hitch. The inside of the cottage is cozy and charming. Since the night was going to be a cold one and I haven’t been camping in years, I wondered if I would end up wishing for a hotel. What I found is that having a space heater and a thick pile of warm blankets to keep the cold away was infinitely better for deep sleep than a furnace. All the essentials for a starter fire were provided, plus everything you’d need to stylishly rough it for a spell. The best part of it all for me were the two tiki torches on either side of the front door. They provided light for a surprising number of hours. As I lay in bed and took a leisurely time falling asleep, I would glance up at the door and see the orange glow from the lamps flickering through the curtains. They almost seemed to get brighter the later it got. On the way out, I took a snapshot of the old blue bus that’s parked near the road, and felt a little wave of emotion go through me. I have found inspiration for my life in both the book and movie versions of Into the Wild, and this bus could almost be the other’s twin (in spirit at least). I hope to come back and bring my wife some day. It’s a wonderful little escape.
