Needs more truth in advertising
This was our third January trip to northern Minnesota, and the first time at the White Pine Retreat. There are lots of nice things about this cabin: the location is outstanding; the interior of the cabin is pretty; the wifi worked; the kitchen was nice. On the other hand, in winter, the cabin is cold. The floor heat does not help much, and you have to keep a fire going in the wood-burning stove in order to keep warm. The owners know this. The instructions in the house say "It gets cool in the back rooms and sometimes in the turret. Use the space heater or blankets if needed." Our biggest surprise was to get this message from the host four days before our arrival: "Winter Guests - The driveway has a steep dip which makes it unwise to navigate in the winter. Instead you are welcome to park at the National Forest Lodge and follow the short path to the cabin." How does one get one's stuff from the National Forest Lodge parking lot to the cabin? Inside the cabin, there are laminated instructions: "In winter, park at the National Forest Lodge and use the sled to transport your supplies to the cabin." In the end: 1) $250/night is too much to pay for a place with poor heating and poor access. 2) these are deficiencies the owner clearly knows about and acknowledges--but only after you've booked your stay.

Dear Andrew, I'm sorry you did not fully enjoy your stay at White Pine Retreat. It is our goal that you would have a great stay with us. I wished you would have called us. we are close by and happy to help in anyway we can. Your stay was during a very cold period (-17 degrees), we could have increased the floor heat for you. Also, we apologize for the walk to the cabin. It hasn't been a concern in the past but we do understand that it does not allow you to park right next to the cabin. We will look into this and see if we can make the parking access closer to the cabin. I sure hope you would try us again. If so please contact us before hand and we will address any issue you may have to ensure a great stay. Kind regards, Joe & Gina

Here for the holiday!
Our second Christmas at this cabin! We brought our tree, lights, presents, and enough food to last us several days. Because there was no snow and we found slushy ice on Gegoka, we drove to nearby hiking trails—all lovely. The kitchen is well-provisioned with spices, herbs, pots and pans and the bookshelves are loaded with terrific wildlife resource books. This cabin has one of the best wood stoves we’ve experienced. Despite gloomy, rainy days, we had a good stay!

Dog friendly
Overall not bad stay if you want to be close to Lusten and have dogs. It had everything we needed to make dinner and things for the dogs. I would stay here again if they update the furniture. The bed and couch was uncomfortable and old. Tv and couch is position in an awkward spot.

Love this cabin, only issue was a ton of dog hair all over the floors/under furniture and was left for us to clean; other than that, it’s always awesome. The property manager Joe is very responsive and extremely helpful. We will always come back.

Relaxing long weekend
Enjoyed campfires and star gazing with the wife. First time I caught a glimpse the milkyway in a number of years. Comfortable cabin with a nice wood burning stove.

Hidden cabin in the woods
A nice quiet stay with all the things you need for cooking (a generously appointed kitchen), nice shower, cool spiral staircase, lots of classic movies on DVD for evening entertainment and nature as your back door. It was very sticky and hot the couple of days we were there which was unusual for this time of year. We used the fans to full extent and closed windows during the day as to keep it cool. Having access to the lake was beneficial. We are lucky to have family in the area that know all the best hikes and places to go for fun meals. This rental cabin has nice views and offers everything you need for a very comfortable stay.

stay at White Pines retreat
Cabin was lovely - in a beautiful secluded woods 30 miles off Hwy 61. Screened porch was a lovely place to enjoy coffee every morning. All the state parks along the lakeshore made for a lot of great hiking.

Large Remote Cabin for Family
Our family of four had the perfect retreat, with comfortable accommodations for us and our family dog. Nearby hiking, and on-site fishing and paddling were great when the sun came out. The large selections of movies and books kept us entertained when the weather was rainy. The location is beautiful. We were in contact with the owners, and they were very responsive and accommodating. Everything that we needed to be comfortable was available for our stay.

Amazing, quiet cabin with secluded lake access
We loved our stay here — really special and thoughtfully designed cabin. We stayed in early August and we worried that it might be hot without AC, but the cabin stayed perfectly cool the entire time because it is so well constructed. The lake access is incredible: exceptional lake kayaking or canoeing any time you want. And we didn’t see a single other person out on the lake at any point. Beautiful water lilies and wildlife (beavers, ducks, bald eagles). Really special place if you’re looking for a secluded, relaxing, and outdoorsy vacation. The mosquitos were pretty aggressive outside but bugspray was sufficient. A perfect stay for us — thank you!

Nice house in a remote location
We had a nice mid-summer stay with our dog. The house is well equipped overall and a pleasant place. The lake is lovely and we enjoyed seeing beavers from the canoe - we even watched one devouring water lily flowers!🙀 The Isabella area is buggy midsummer, so nearby outdoor activities not on the lake required repellent. We drove to/near the north shore for less buggy hiking.

Excellent getaway to reconnect with my family
We loved our stay and wished we had more time to spend there. The cabin itself was fantastic and my kids loved the loft with the spiral staircase. Though it rained a bit - preventing us from being outside as much as we would have liked - the space allowed us to spend some great quality time with each other, which is rare these days. Once I did get out on the lake it was so peaceful. I definitely recommend taking the time to go down and get on a kayak to explore. Just make sure you put on some decent bug spray for the walk down.

Peaceful Retreat
This was such a nice remote space to get away from the world and just relax for a few days. We brought our two pups and they were in heaven smelling all the smells and exploring in the wilderness. We went over to the Flathorn Lake picnic area and walked the trail a bit - it was super buggy. Bring Deep Woods Off! Property managers were super-responsive. Would definitely recommend this property!

Amazing Minnesota getaway
We loved our stay at the White Pine Retreat!! Despite the bugs (bring lots of bug spray!!), we we able to go fishing and canoe around the lake. When the bugs got too much later in the day, we had a great time hanging out indoors and enjoying the extensive DVD collection. By the end of the first day, we were already talking about coming back!!

Winter get away

Winter Wonderland
A great cabin in a beautiful setting, especially when there is 2 feet of snow all around. The cabin is very cozy and had all the amenities we needed to enjoy home cooked meals. The wood burning stove was especially nice to warm up after one day of dog sledding and one day of skiing. We did not have WiFi for our stay due to the recent storm, but we didn’t mind as it forced us to enjoy each other’s company without TVs or iPads. The cabin was a bit dusty which bothered some of our sinuses, but overall the common areas were clean.

Great place to take your family to spend quality time.
Perfect cabin and scenic setting. Great place to spend quality time with family. We enjoyed walking through the woods, sledding, playing games, a bonfire, and hot drinks on the dock watching the sun set. A beautiful and quiet setting!

Lovely spot in the Superior National forest!
This was a perfect cabin stay in the National forest! The trees and lake were beautiful with the first real snowfall of the year and the cabin was warm and cozy with a wonderful woodstove and heated floors. Thank you!

Great North Woods Cabin
This is a great north woods cabin located in the wilderness of northeast Minnesota. Very comfortable, well-equipped and just what we needed for a few days of exploring the Superior National Forest. The property manager was very friendly, responsive and helpful. We recommend this property.

Wonderful fall stay
We had a great time! Everything was as expected, clean and well kept. The kids had a ton of fun in the canoe and kayak and it was a great time. We had a flukey power outage for a few hours on the first night that scared the kids, but it eventually came back on and the owners were very responsive. We hope to return again. -Steve and Cassie

Nice cabin in the middle of the Superior National Forest
Comfortable cabin with nice sized kitchen. This was our second stay here and we really like the quiet remoteness this cabin offers. It is a bit of a drive to grocery stores so be prepared.

Spacious cabin with many option for play inside (DVDs, books, games) in nature-rich area. Winter suggestion check into a 1/2 day trip with local dog sledders who are in easy reach, then come back and enjoy the wood stove and big kitchen! This cabin has authentic and unique decor (not all the usual kitschy northwoods MN style), paired with antique furniture, a woodstove, a screened porch, and a spiral staircase to the loft - overall a comfortable and perfectly sized cabin for a couple or a small group/family. We had a slight issue getting into the cabin because we'd received an erroneous email with a code that didn't work. The first number we called (from the instructions on the door) was out of service, then the second number we called (from the VRBO listing) was a former owner who fortunately knew the new owner and provided their phone number. At that point we reached the right folks and they immediately gave us the right code, so all in all it was a minor and brief inconvenience, but it seems there are several spots to update/correct contact information should there be any problems. To be fair, the current owners' phone number was included in the "welcome letter" they sent (but this did not match the VRBO listing contact info), and we had unfortunately left the letter at home! Finally, while we adored the inside of the cabin, it was extremely sticky and buggy outside so we only walked down to the lake once (kind of sketchy boardwalk) and unfortunately didn't take the canoes or kayaks out. It was a plenty relaxing getaway indoors and in the surrounding areas (e.g., Ely and the North Shore). Thanks!

Family fishing trip
Everything was great from check in through check out. Loved using the canoes and kayaks to go fishing. Was able to haul them to other lakes for fishing as well. Hiking trail at a nearby lake was a little over grown but we were able to hike part of it. Spent lots of time on the screened porch and at the fire pit despite the pesky mosquitoes! Would definitely stay again!! Thank you!

Peaceful getaway from the summer heat
Very impressed with the cabin. Nice, we’ll-equipped kitchen. We LOVED the dining nook/ sunroom. Guide book and maps were very helpful. Boardwalk was charming, but it could use some maintenance. Natural setting was even better than we hoped. We explored Gegoka Lake by canoe and Flathorn lake on foot. Day trips to Lake Superior and Sax-Zim bog. Lots of birds everywhere! Only complaint was the mixup about the access code. Lucky we were able to contact Joe; otherwise it might have been a long night!

Woodland retreat
What a wonderful wonderful place! My wife and I stayed for 4 nights to get away from it all. Mission accomplished! The best aspect of this stay is it's isolation and quiet. Its a dream. The place itself isn't overly fancy, but is well cared for and well provisioned. It's a family cabin, so you can feel the love that went into it. We enjoyed our time reading, watching movies, cooking, and playing games. We would book this place again in a heartbeat.

Sister Hiking
Great sister hiking trip! The house was the perfect getaway for recovery and hanging out by the fire after a long day of hiking. The property was just as pictured and Joe and Gina were super responsive. We’d definitely return!
