About this property
Cozy Cabin Perfect For Fall Getaway: now w/ Wi-Fi!
Fern Hollow is an easy 7 mile drive to Saugatuck and was designed/built in 1980 in traditional Michigan-cottage style. Taking cues from old summer camps, Fern Hollow creates an atmosphere where guests can return to their youth and a time when they enjoyed 'camping out' with family and friends. Whether sitting around the campfire or the fieldstone fireplace, enjoying an outdoor shower, sleeping in the open air of the bunkhouse, or strolling the trails to the beach and playground, time spent at Fern Hollow is sure to relax the mind, sooth the soul, and return you to a time and place once cherished but not forgotten.
Fern Hollow is a charming cabin located on 13 secluded acres and comfortably sleeps 8. Roughly a half mile path walk to public beach access: West Side County Park (the north stairs by the restrooms are open) which can be walked to by trail or you could drive and enter through the park entrance.
Public beach access within walking distance: West Side County Park which can followed by trail or you could drive and enter through the park entrance. If you choose to walk, please follow the Beach sign trail that is behind the fire pit until you reach a gravel road which is called Park Lane. You will see other houses/buildings on your trail walk, this is normal. Turn left onto Park Lane and follow to Lakeshore drive, you will cross the road into a parking lot and will see the playground. You will use the north stairs located by the restrooms to get down to the beach. This is a bit of a hike so if there a smaller children, wagons or people who won't do well with unsteady grounds, please be sure to utilize the option to drive as many say that's easier.
Although we do not have central air conditioning at the cabin, we have added a portable A/C to help out. When not using the portable A/C, there are tall trees surrounding the cabin so it's shaded making it very comfortable with ceiling fans, the double doors open, floor fans on as that really helps move the air with the screened in porch. While we DO NOT have Cable TV/channels at the cabin, cell phone service is good so you can use your phone and hot spots. There is a TV used as a monitor in the living room with an HDMI cord so you can stream from laptop/device as well as a Bluetooth Speaker.
The property is professionally sprayed for mosquitoes.

There are 5 beds total: - Full bed on the end of the screened in porch off of the bunk bedroom. There is a door that separates the bunk room from the screened in porch. There is curtain for privacy from the rest of the screened in porch. - A set of full size bunk beds in bedroom. - Queen size bed in bedroom . - Queen size bed in separate sleeping pavilion outside.
• Please note that the queen and full size bunk rooms in the cabin do have walls/doors in between them and the living room but they do not go all the way up to the ceiling.
The cabin has a large screened in porch that wraps around 3 sides. There is an outdoor shower, gas grill, wood fireplace, fire pit (we provide wood and propane gas for grill). There is fully equipped kitchen with oven, microwave, toaster, silverware, plates, utensils, pots and pans, etc.
PLEASE NOTE: We are unable to do check-in/check-out on Saturdays during the Summer Season (mid June through Labor Day weekend) as it's a very busy day for our cleaning crew. When requesting to book, please do not leave a night or two in between other reservations that will leave un-bookable nights for future guests. We are not responsible for acts of God or Mother Nature.
Fern Hollow was built by a seasoned local contractor who was nearing retirement and who welcomed the opportunity to build a replica of the building style he claimed 'he cut his teeth on' in the 1930's as a young carpenter. His experience and attention to detail show throughout the cottage in authentic elements such as a hand stacked fieldstone fireplace, French-doors, open-shelving, single-timber-hand-cut beveled window sills and a center-floor radiant furnace ideal for cool Michigan mornings.
Fern Hollow has served as the epicenter for over 40 years of family reunions and many annual gatherings of old friends. We’re thrilled to share our slice of the woods with you.
We invite you to join in our history of spending summer days with loved ones, nature, and time.

Enjoyed our stay at the cabin, it had everything we needed, a short walk to the beach and a playground. Indoor shower didn’t have great water pressure, but the outdoor shower worked great. Issue with hot water during our stay was promptly resolved. Very unique property, we enjoyed the privacy, saw many deer from the cabin.
From the moment we arrived, we were enchanted by the woodsy surroundings. Even though it is close to the beach and to the towns of Douglas and Saugatuck, you feel far from everything hidden away in the trees. Our favorite part was the wrap-around screened porch. I spent my mornings reading on the porch swing and listening to the birdsong.
A lively, rustic cabin- exactly as it’s advertised. My husband and two dogs loved it. Read the amenities so you aren’t surprised. No AC, wi-fi, or washer/dryer . Regardless, the beds are comfy, design is fabulous and the grounds are beautiful. We would rent again for sure!
This cabin was great for our family getaway. Our teens were at first bummed that there was no Wi-if, but it was great for old fashioned family time: card games, camp fires, and running the dog through the woods. We felt so far from civilization and yet we were a short drive from interesting food, drink, and dunes.
Loved the property and the outdoor spaces—fire ring, trails, and beautiful trees. Our dog learned how to let himself in and out of the cabin doors and roamed freely in the woods. The cabin is rustic as expected. Short walk to the beach. Beds were comfy and clean and we had plenty of towels, etc. Our request to manager for additional firewood (we had a fire every night) was promptly answered. Brink lots of bug spray.
Very isolated and charming rustic cabin that needs lots of work to be highly marketable in VRBO portfolio. The sound of the freeway rumble nearby intercepts any serenity experience and the quietness of nature. Many outside tree lights were burned out in particular the light at front stair entrance. Rotten stairs at drive up need replacement. We experienced both inside and outside showers noting that the flow from shower head is weak because of rusted spray jets. Bed in outside sleeping room has a mattress weakly supported by the seat of a very small child’s chair. A heavy person causes the entire bed to seesaw. Unable to get TV to work by following directions provided. It would be nice if a map was provided for locating light switches, towels, silverware. The step from outside patio into kitchen is higher than normal and caused a member of the party to trip and fall. That rise should have a posted caution.
Kindling wood was not stacked for welcoming use at either the inside or outside fireplace. Could not find the umbrellas. Are they provided?
Trails are over rated and don’t lead to the beach. A novice could become lost in the woods quickly because of overgrowth and trail abruptly stopping.
Actually enjoyed our stay with relatives who are conditioned to clamping.
We had an amazing time at this lovely rustic retreat. We spent so much time just enjoying the property. It was easy access to all the things we wanted to do on our vacation. We loved having so much nature around us♥️
I enjoyed staying in this cabin, with it's beautiful trees. Very peaceful. Also, close to hiking, shopping, or just walking on the beach. Beds were comfortable, enjoyed the screened porch, loved walking the dogs in the woods on the property, and owners very responsive and accommodating with your questions. We loved it!
What an amazing and very private property! This place has a lot of space to explore the woods and really hang out with your friends and family. It also was a short walk to the beach if you want a completely different change of scenery. My friends and I hung out mostly around the fire at night and they were quick to respond about additional firewood when needed. The pictures online are hard to tell on sleeping arrangements but they were pretty separate and all had doors to close for privacy if/when needed. The beds were also very comfortable and allowed for a great night sleep. I went with my friends this time but would absolutely take my family back here to stay again.
I stayed here with my mother, aunt, sisters and cousins. It was a perfect ladies weekend in a perfect cozy cabin. The property is beautiful and the cabin is quaint and comfortable. We enjoyed walking the property and to the lake. We spent an afternoon shopping in Saugatuck and returned to the cabin for wine and a campfire after dinner.
Fern Hollow is located in the most beautiful setting. It was a great opportunity to step back in time and enjoy the beauty of nature. We enjoyed the fire pit, roasted marshmallows, and walked our dogs on the wooded trails to the lake. I highly recommend Fern Hollow for a lovely fall getaway.
It was nice n cozy. Except wouldn't recommend staying in the hut outside its cold n blows circuts trying to heat it. Definitely a spring summer rental. Seems smaller than the pictures. Couches were uncomfortable not enough indoor seating. Bunk bed steps are not supported my daughter fell into the window we didn't use it after that. Porch which was too cold this time of year to enjoy looked like it would be perfect for family time. All around beautiful property. It did have a grill to use which wasn't mentioned.
We were able to drive to many site seeing sights within 15-20 minutes from cottage. Enjoyed bonfires and cooking family dinners. Walking distance to parks and lake:) Sitting on porch and playing games?
First timers! Kids loved the woods and trails. Gorgeous woods. Got immediate response for issues. I have a higher standard for cleanliness. Cooler weather that week and fire wood was replenished as needed!!
It was a great property. No WiFi but the landscape and nature views were very good. The inside of the property is decent but I wouldn’t stay with more than 5 because it’s not that big. Great time tho
Fabulous time was had by the entire family at Fern Hollow. Location was beautiful! We had plenty of space and beds were very comfortable. I especially loved the outdoor shower. The only downside was the beach erosion making it difficult to get to the beach but we made due. We all agreed that we would definitely vacation at Fern Hollow again.
This was our third time staying at Fern Hallow and we had a great time again. We loving coming back to this peaceful cabin every year. Plenty of room for our family of 5 and we love exploring during the day and coming back for dinner and smores at the firepit. Our dog loves the property as well!
We had the best weekend at Fern Hollow! The cabin was idyllic for a weekend getaway; it had all of the amenities and all of the charm. The beds were comfy, the outdoor shower was amazing as was the wrap around porch, and we spent each evening gathered around the fire pit. It felt like the best of a summer beach vacation and a fall weekend in the woods. The location was ideal, too. We were a short walk from the beach and a close drive to places such as Saugatuck, Crane's Pie Pantry, Salt of the Earth, and Virtue Cider. I would highly recommend this place to anyone - it's so magical and we can't wait to come back again!
