Make a journey into Cosenza’s past when you explore narrow cobbled alleys that open onto enchanting piazzas and ornate palazzos in the preserved Old Town.
Cosenza’s Centro Storico (Old Town) presents a glimpse of the city during the Bruttians’ golden age. Discover the city’s trove of beautifully preserved architecture, which decorates a maze of winding alleys and spacious squares. Admire the Old Town’s collection of churches, convents, fortresses and palazzos. Follow the twists and turns of the medieval streets until you reach riverside promenades and panoramic viewpoints in Cosenza’s hillside historic district.
Go on a self-guided walking tour around the Centro Storico and investigate some of Cosenza’s remarkable history. Wedged between the Crati and Busento rivers, the district is not only picturesque, but also significant to the city’s folk history. According to a local legend, the meeting point of the two rivers is the place where Alaric, the King of the Visigoths, was buried alongside his horse and treasure. Stroll across the river to reach the historic landmark Valdesi Square. From here, continue along Corso Bernardino Telesio. This narrow alley is characterized by a string of tall palazzos looming overhead.
As you wander the street, peer into the old workshops of the city’s traditional artisans. Note carved insignias that show where iron-lace makers and woodcarvers once plied their trades. Visit the Casa delle Culture to see exhibitions and displays. From here, begin the ascent to the Piazza del Duomo. This piazza is fronted by the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cosenza Cathedral, which contains a Byzantine-era icon of the Madonna. Take a break at one of the old-fashioned cafés and delicatessens to try traditional Calabrian cuisine.
Return to the gently sloping street to pass a Roman archaeological site and buildings adorned with classical façades. You’ll also see the 17th-century Palazzo del Governo and the Alfoso Rendano Theater. The hilltop is crowned by a pretty terraced park, known as Villa Vecchia. Admire views across the Centro Storico and relax on a park bench in the shade of the trees.
