In many respects, I feel privileged to have been able to stay in this house. Our host, Pedro, was superbly welcoming, helpful, and accommodating. Thank you Pedro!! The house dates from before 1640 (according to an old map). It is on an ancient Roman road, which is part of a pilgrimage camino. The house oozes with character. But it is also quirky, and not always user-friendly, especially to an older, mobility-challenged person. The steps to enter the house are steep and awkward. The large, deep bathtub is a challenge to enter and leave. The spiral staircase is challenging. One of our group found that the flat was cold. Yes, there is a heating system, but it involved building a fire, which seemed too prone to disaster. A more modern accommodation would probably have been more comfortable, but staying in this historic house gave us a rare peek into a corner of Portuguese history, and the opportunity to meet its charming owner.
