A little awkward with the shared bathroom situation but we knew about that at booking so can't really complain. Otherwise an enjoyable stay in an amazing area!

Staying at the McCarthy Lodge was like taking a walk through time. Lobby area at Ma's Boarding House was awesome and cozy. The gentleman who checked us in on Aug. 3rd was very kind and gracious. The 'hostess' and Jane of all trades at Salmon and Bear was a delight 😊 She too, made us feel welcome and engaged us in lively conversation.

Loved the early 1900s vibe. Center of town. Easy shuttle access. Most comfy bed EVER! Got to use shuttle for free and got free breakfast. Note that bedroom is tied to shared bathrooms/shower. No outlets in rooms. Free wifi. Great place to stay!

The noise of the water heater from below was unbearable. I could not sleep even with earplugs as it made a loud noise for 2 seconds every 30 seconds or so. If you stay here, definitely go for the top floor.

The room was clean but amenities are sparse. Remember you are staying in a very old pre electricity building. There were no outlets in bedrooms. The staff were helpful and able to run an extension cord from a hall outlet for our cpaps. There is good wifI. Overall the experience was positive. It is an interesting place to visit amd great basecamp to explore Kennicott. The shuttle service is included, ran frequently and they provided a very decent breakfast every morning.

the staff was outstanding and very helpful. the rooms were very clean. the issue we had was that the front porch furniture was not comfortable would have liked to sit on porch more. they had Adirondack chairs which were hard to get in and out of. McCarthy is not very handicap accessible, as there were steps to climb. For what it is a picture of life in the old times it was a worthwhile experience and I am glad we went. the other issue is I know that with old buildings the walls are paper thin and there were some inconsiderate guests that were drunk and talking loudly and keeping me awake, so when i got up at 0630 I was reciprocating. Over all we had a good time, thank you.

This review is relevant to the area. It was our 1st trip to AK & we wanted to go inside the state - driving. Mc Carthy Lodge resort is located in St. Elias/Wrangel NP. That Park is wilderness. This hotel (I wouldn't call it a resort no matter it's located) It's a converted motel that was originally used as housing for the copper miners. It was our 1st experience with a shared bathroom. The bathroom was always clean & stocked. The decor is quaint & clean. Depending on the room there's a sink in it. There are no electrical outlets in any of the rooms but there is a charging station in the sitting room area. There are no locks on any of the room doors, except the bathrooms. We inquired from several employees about the lack of locks & all said it hadn't been a problem. We took anything of value with us. The staff is ultra welcoming and very accommodating. The few restaurants in this tiny town have excellent food no matter the meal. The breakfast was wonderful & homemade. There is a free shuttle from the footbridge to the hotel and shuttles that run between McCarthy & Kennicott. This hotel epitomizes AK. We would definitely return.

I pretty much got what I expected. A small room, shared bathroom. That’s OK what I was a bit disappointed in is that the rooms did not have any electrical outlets. If you wanted to charge something, you had to leave it out in the hall. Also, the rooms do not have any locks on the doors. Hope everybody’s trustworthy. There was a latch on the inside, so at least there was privacy while I was sleeping.

This was our first time in McCarthy and Ma Johnson staff helped us plan the visit and made us feel like family. The staff and the hotel is amazing.
