Jacques Donatien le Ray, fils d’un gros bourgeois de Nantes achète le château en 1750. Il y donnait des fêtes populaires, ce qui préserva le château lors de la Révolution de 1789. Il reçoit Benjamin Franklin, Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Son fils, part pour le Nouveau Monde pour y fonder une colonie dans l'Ohio, du nom de Chaumont.
