Take a romantic stroll through charming streets and alleys and visit an iconic castle in this medieval city on the Danube River.

As a capital city on a national border, Bratislava is influenced by its neighboring country of Austria. Many ethnic communities have made their mark on the history and culture of the city. With the famous Danube River flowing through its center, Bratislava serves as Slovakia’s hub of culture, politics and economics. You’ll find numerous museums, theaters and intriguing landmarks scattered along its winding, cobblestone streets. Note the skyline consisting of charming 20th-century structures and medieval towers.

Visit Bratislava Castle, which sits atop a hill overlooking the Danube River. This landmark dominating the Bratislava skyline is the most recognizable building in the city, with red spirals in the corners of the large white structure. Arrive at night to see the structure bathed in gold light. Stroll around the hill and capture photos of the elegant castle. Step inside to browse collections from the Slovak National Museum.

Behind the castle is the Slavin Monument, which pays tribute to the nation’s soldiers who died in World War II. Marvel at the panoramic views of the city from the monument, one of the highest points in the city.

Enjoy a relaxing walk through the quaint historical center. Look around the City Museum in the Old Town Hall and climb the steep staircase of the clock tower. Visit the historical neo-renaissance building of the Slovak National Theatre, the oldest of its kind in the country.

Spend the afternoon at Bratislava Zoo or the city’s Botanical Gardens. Enjoy green parks and hints of a rural landscape in the middle of the city.

Travel between attractions for free on public transport with a Bratislava City Card. Also use the card to get a free walking tour of the city and discounts on entry to museums, galleries and restaurants, plus many more benefits. Go to the Visit Bratislava website for full details.

Bratislava is one of the warmest parts of the country the climate is generally mild with warm summers. Temperatures do, however, hover around freezing with occasional snow flurries during winter.
