Riverside Cottage, Abergwynant (sleeps up to 3) - don't forget your binoculars!
8/10 Good
"We had a great stay at the cottage; the location is perfect, and the bird-feeding facilities are a nice touch to get further involved with nature. The kitchen has up-to-date equipment, making life easier; however, cleanliness could be improved. Looking at reviews, I do think our experience could have been a one-off here; however, in some cases, equipment had food on it from previous guests, the dishwasher utensil holder had a small section of mould on it and areas of the house were dusty. Overall, I would highly recommend staying here."
"An unexpected delight. Basic clean room but with everything you need (except en-suite) but you know that when you book, although room did have a sink. The stairs might be a problem with the not so able bodied. A nice touch with a little tray of coffee, tea and biscuits. Great location very near sea front and castle. Remarkable breakfast with quality bacon, sausage and good coffee. The hosts, although only saw them at breakfast were very pleasant and attentive."
"I have stayed here a few times and it never disappoints. It provides everything you may need for a short stay and has a breakfast every morning. It is also useful that there is free parking."
"We had a wonderful experience at the Starling Cloud, thanks to the exceptional customer service from the entire team. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and regularly checked in to make sure we had everything we needed without ever being intrusive. The food was absolutely delicious, and the service really made the meal even more enjoyable. A special mention to Ben, who went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. His warm, professional attitude and outstanding service truly stood out. The external building on the bar and restaurant could use a new lick of paint to freshen it up but that's all minor cosmetic maintenance. We look forward to visiting again!"
"A very nice hotel with lots of character and quirky features. It is ideally located next to the gorge walk and has a few tables outside on the pavement to make the most of the views. We had a room at the top of the hotel with a comfy large bed and lovely bathroom. The staff are young and enthusiastic but lack leadership as witnessed in the dining room. They were disorganised and seemed rather lost. The food at dinner was fairly average but perfectly acceptable."
"Staff were marvellous and really made our stay here. Everyone was friendly, chatty and helpful. We ate there twice in the evenings and the food was good and reasonable value, as was the breakfast. The bar had a nice vibe and was fun to sit in; you can sit out and admire the sea view at the front. Parking was a little problematic, and in high season must be highly challenging.
The hotel is a listed building on the seafront and apparently this means that it can not be fitted with a lift, so you need to be fit to access the third floor rooms. Staff will help with cases though. Room was clean and met our needs, Generally we enjoyed staying there, and would come again. Good if you are reasonably fit."
"Our first Impression of our arrival in Aberdovey wasn't good. It is worth stating that only the suites at the hotel have reserved parking, other rooms have to use the nearby council car park, which is convenient, but costs an eye watering £15,40 a day. Not the hotel's fault of course, but I think guests should be made aware. The car park does not accept cards either, only cash and the App.
We were allocated a room on the top floor, the stairs are rather small, and difficult to manouver with luggage, and badly scuffed in places. Our room was very spacious, with a comfortable bed with quality bedding. The bathroom too was spacious with good quality towels. There was a kettle plus tea & coffee, together with a small sofa and coffee table.
It was very hot during our stay there, and there is no air conditioning of course, nor fans provided, so only the small windows to provide any airflow. However, the kitchen extractor fan(s) were located outside the bedroom window, and were going until almost midnight every day, from around 7am. This together with the heat meant poor quality sleeping every night.
The cooked breakfasts were very good, but not the "Continental" option, only apples, oranges, cereals and a few croisants were available most days plus toast, and yoghurts if they had any. No rolls, meats, vegetables or cheeses. Water for hot drinks is from an Urn, no coffee machine. The "Continental" items ran out frequently every day.
Note: the Kitchen Hygene Rating is only 3."
