8.8/10 Excellent! (906 reviews)
I liked that this was a historic hotel-- the rooms are updated for modern comfort but maintain a unique look. There is a fantastic outdoor patio on the 2nd floor outside of a coffee and water station, and the restaurant has good ambiance and breakfast. However, we stayed when the weather was hot and humid, and the temperature in our 3rd floor room was miserable. The hotel has portable window air conditioners but the unit was not turned on in our room prior to checking in. The staff told me the room should cool down quickly after turning on the AC but we were gone for an entire Padres game and the temperature was practically the same when we returned. We couldn't open the window because there was engine revving and tire squealing up and down the downtown streets well into the night. Management must be aware of noise-- there were ear plugs left in our room, and a quick Google search after the fact revealed that this is a common issue. This hotel needs to figure out how their guests can get a decent night's sleep.

9/10 Wonderful! (1,466 reviews)
The hotel was okay overall, but unfortunately, I don’t think we would stay here again especially with kids.
The air conditioning in our room didn’t work properly, so the room stayed uncomfortably hot throughout our stay. There also isn’t room service, and if you forget something or need something simple like silverware, you have to go down to the restaurant to get it.
The restaurant staff, however, were absolutely wonderful and easily one of the highlights of our stay.
We also rented a cabana, which I felt was disappointing for the $250 minimum spend. There were items left behind from the previous guests, and the chairs could definitely use some reupholstering. The pool itself is also quite small, especially when you have kids who want to swim and play.
I will say that the property looks much more resort-like in the photos than it feels in person, so I found the pictures to be a little deceiving. If traveling without kids, it may be a different experience, but with a family, I would personally choose a more traditional resort-style property next time.
It was great to be in walking distance of everything and have an awesome view of Petco park.
