As we watched you driving away down the drive we knew that this was the final act by ourselves with 88 Lodge under our ownership. Your review really does say it all and wraps up our time here. So sorry you chose to be anonymous as we like to extend a personal thank you direct to you which is inclusive of re-booking options not available elsewhere. Never-the-less we do thank you so much for your top marks and kind comments.

We get so many positive reviews we will concentrate more on your negative points on this occasion. ‘Off the beaten track’. This term would normally mean totally away from any track & way into the countryside. We are just 1km from the State Highway, shop, pub, garage, take away, hair dressers, liquor store, & 3km to major shops, doctors, restaurants. Taking the overall total distance, we are the closest. Northland has 2000+km of gravel roads. Koropewa Rd has not yet been blessed with a tar seal but we are FAR from ‘Off the beaten track’. We are at the crossroads for travelling north, south, east or west. Ideally located but at the same time in peaceful countryside away from the hubbub of life. ‘Tight Parking’. We have parking for 6 vehicles. One each for 4 guest rooms & 2 for our vehicles. During your visit, we had a full house. Matters not helped by 1 guest arriving in a campervan, another room of two occupants arrived in separate cars, & it was necessary for us to have workmen on site during the day time. So yes, it was necessary for drivers to exercise caution & effective driving skills but nobody exhibited any problems or raised any concerns. We have held weddings at 88 Lodge with 140 guests all arriving by cars. By using the roadside parking as well all were accommodated. Your feedback form to us expressed a comment that you would have liked a cooked vegetarian breakfast. We say to all of our guests ‘If there is something you would like or need do please ask, we can sort it out if we know about it, we can’t if we don’t”. A cooked breakfast is available, vegetarian or otherwise.

So pleased you found our maps and suggestions for what to do to get the very best out of your time in the Bay of Islands so helpful. Thank you also for your complement about Rocco. So many guests have fallen in love with him and he so much enjoys the interaction with those guests who enjoy dogs. He does however have a canny knack of knowing when to give space to those who are not so keen. We look forward to hosting you again in 88 Lodge when you return to Northland.

It was just lovely having you stay with us and Rocco really missed you when you left. We agonized for many years before adopting a dog. Mainly because we felt most guests would prefer it if there was not a dog around the place. We appear to have been quite wrong in this respect. Rocco has proven to be a huge hit with everyone. Even those who fear dogs have found his gentle, obedient, friendly and playful ways to be charming. The way we do breakfast is somewhat different to the accommodation norm and we find our guests really enjoy this difference as you did. All our breakfast ingredients are sourced locally or are homemade to give a true kiwi experience..
