The first thing that hit us was being asked to pay up front for two nights accommodation, although this seems to be a growing trend, and I suppose we could have paid up front on hotels.com, the manner seemed odd.
The room was clean and although it had been refurbished in recent times, seemed very dated. Room facilities were adequate and en-suite very small for a superior room. The room had a balcony, but this almost eluded us because one of the patio doors would not open and the other took a while to unlock and then very hard to re-lock. This is a hazard if evacuation is necessary.
I went to ask if breakfast was included, it was not (not a problem) and we asked to be booked in, we were asked again to pay in advance. We refused and ate in the little cafe nearby, where we had a fantastic breakfast bap, orange juice and tea/ coffee probably much cheaper than the hotel!
We met a local on the ferry to Falmouth, she suggested that the hotel was struggling, which explains why monies were requested up front, but as other hotels do, they could have reserved an amount on a credit card to cover the bill and any incidentals.
This pay up front attitude left a sour taste in the mouth.
In the evening we didn’t eat at the Ship & Castle, preferring to eat in the 2 other hotels in St Mawes. Both we highly recommend.
We would not stay at the Ship & Castle again
