My family and I always enjoy staying at Belmond hotels when we travel. I had visited Charleston a few times before and stayed at different hotels with my husband. This time during a mother-daughter trip, we stayed at Charleston Place, which was once part of Belmond. The service was very poor and borderline racist. I have an accent which shouldn’t matter, but I believe it added to the poor service I received. The night before checking out, I asked a lady at the front desk if we could do a late checkout since our flight was going to be at night. She said she wasn’t sure & to call in the morning. Very unhelpful. In the morning we call the front desk to request a late checkout. The same lady answers the phone & says she can delay our checkout by only 1 hr. This would’ve been fine except for when my daughter and I then went downstairs, there was a white blonde-haired woman in front of us who asked for a late checkout and received the response, “of course, what time?” She said 3/3:30pm and it was granted. We asked the front desk to please schedule a taxi for us and were brought to the transportation desk, where a young guy, not even looking at my daughter or I but straight at the other employee who asked him to call a taxi for us, said in front us us, “do they have a room here?” Would we come off the street to ask for a taxi? Appalling. Beautiful lobby and but outdated old and carpet-stained rooms with terribly loud ACs & bright green lighting control panels that can’t be adjusted.
