What you can expect

  • Cover more ground than a walking tour while staying close to everyday township life. Start at the Hector Pieterson Memorial and learn how Soweto developed and the role it played in the anti-apartheid struggle.

Ride past the home of activist Mama Lilian Ngoyi, then on to Vilakazi Street, where Nelson Mandela lived from 1946 to 1962 (entry to Mandela House is optional and paid on the day) and Archbishop Desmond Tutu's house stands just down the road.

Halfway through, stop for a kota, Soweto's famous stuffed quarter-loaf, included in your price. Then enjoy an easy ride back to the start. Your guide grew up in Soweto, and the pace leaves time to stop and chat with residents. Bike, helmet, lunch and bottled water are included.
