What you can expect

A unique staple of Japan's restaurant industry, replica food is as fascinating to learn about as it is tasty to look at. Try your hand at creating ultra-realistic replicas of everyday foods during this workshop that introduces you to the basics of this multi-billion yen business.

Meet your instructors in an Asakusa showroom that's packed with hundreds of realistic replica foods. Your lesson begins with a brief history of the fake bites, which first appeared in Japan in the late 1920s when people were beginning to dine out more. Since then, the art has become a staple of Japanese restaurant culture, with realistic replicas on display outside shop doors. Though the fake food is now made with PVC plastic, this workshop lets you get hands-on with the original method of using wax.

Carefully following guidance from your instructors, create wax replicas of lettuce and 2 types of tempura. As you bundle the vibrant green leaves of the lettuce and add tantalizing crispiness to your tempura pieces, the precise skill it takes to master these arts becomes clear. Get tips from your helpful instructors on how to make the most realistic-looking foods possible. After your tempting samples are complete, feel free to take them home with you as a charming souvenir.
