Velankanni is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India and one of the very few places where Christians, Hindus and Muslims come to pray at the same shrine. The Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health draws millions of barefoot pilgrims every year from across Tamil Nadu, each one carrying a private hope or a private gratitude.
The four hour drive from Pondicherry through the Cauvery delta is itself worth the journey. Fertile paddy fields, fishing villages and the slow rhythm of coastal Tamil Nadu before the basilica's white Gothic spires come into view above the coastline.
Inside the shrine complex, pilgrims offer votive candles shaped like eyes, limbs and hearts as acts of thanksgiving for healings received. The museum houses crutches, silver model boats and thousands of handwritten letters left by devotees over the centuries. One of the most moving collections of human hope in India.
Private car from Pondicherry, expert guide, all entry fees and a traditional lunch included.
