The building was commissioned on September 25, 1859, on Miragaia Beach, based on a design by the French architect Jean-François Colson. Its first section was inaugurated in 1869, and construction was completed ten years later. Its construction required the creation of the enormous quay platform on which the Customs House stands, replacing the former Miragaia Beach. In addition, to facilitate the transportation of goods, the Customs House and Campanhã Station were connected by a railway branch line (the Alfândega Branch Line) in 1888, and Rua Nova da Alfândega was also opened. This series of changes is considered by many to be one of the most significant urban and landscape transformations in the city of Porto during the 19th century.

The Tram Museum is a museum run by Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto (STCP), which owns a collection of trams, trailers, and other vehicles. It was opened in May 1992 and is housed in the former Massarelos thermal power station in Porto, Portugal. The museum showcases materials related to the history of electric rail-based public transport in the city. The museum’s collection includes 16 trams, 5 trailers, and 2 service vehicles used to support the trams. Every year, a parade featuring some of these vehicles is organized along the route between Massarelos and Passeio Alegre. In 1996, the museum was praised by Nélson Oliveira, then vice-president of the Portuguese Association of Railway Enthusiasts (APAC), as “one of the best in Europe, if not the world.”

Ribeira is one of the oldest and most characteristic areas of the city of Porto, Portugal. Located in the parish of São Nicolau, along the Douro River, it forms part of the Historic Centre of Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, it is a very popular area with tourists and is home to numerous bars and restaurants. Notable landmarks in Ribeira include Praça da Ribeira, also popularly known as the Cube Square; Rua da Fonte Taurina, one of the oldest streets in the city; the Muro dos Bacalhoeiros; and Casa do Infante, where it is believed that Prince Henry the Navigator was born in 1394. This part of Porto was also home to one of the city’s most charismatic figures, known as the “Duke of Ribeira”, who was famous for saving several people from drowning.

The D. Luís I Bridge (or Ponte Luiz I, in the original spelling inscribed on the bridge) is a metal bridge with two decks, built between 1881 and 1886. It connects the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, on the north and south banks respectively, separated by the Douro River in Portugal. The bridge replaced the old suspension bridge that previously stood on the same site. It was built according to a design by Belgian engineer Théophile Seyrig, who had previously collaborated with Gustave Eiffel on the construction of the D. Maria Pia Bridge, a railway bridge. The bridge was inaugurated in 1886 (upper deck) and in 1888 (lower deck and full operation). The D. Luís I Bridge has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1982 and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

Passeio Alegre Garden is a garden in Foz do Douro, in the current parish of Aldoar, Foz do Douro and Nevogilde, in the city of Porto, Portugal. It was designed by landscape architect Émile David.

The Douro Estuary Local Nature Reserve is located in the parish of São Pedro da Afurada, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto District, Portugal, and was established on July 10, 2018. It covers an area of 62 hectares and serves as a resting, feeding, and sheltering area for many species of migratory birds. The protection of birds and the landscape is the main objective of this refuge. The area consists of two distinct environments: the salt marsh vegetation, which is wetter, and the dune environment, which is considerably drier, where the sand retains less moisture.

The Douro River (known as Duero in Spanish) rises in the peaks of the Sierra de Urbión, in the Spanish province of Soria, at an altitude of 2,160 metres, and crosses northern Portugal before reaching its mouth near the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. It is the third-longest river in the Iberian Peninsula. The river is 897 km long, with 572 km flowing through Spain, 213 km navigable in Portugal, and 112 km forming an international border between the two countries. This latter section, where the river narrows and its bed becomes deeper, is known as the “Arribas” (cliffs). Its banks have been protected through the creation of the Douro International Natural Park in Portugal and the Arribes del Duero Natural Park in Spain.
