What you can expect
Speed out of Tokyo on a bullet train to Nagano prefecture to see the historic Zenko-ji Temple and meet snow monkeys in Jigokudani Monkey Park. Throughout the day, a private guide relates the heritage of the Buddhist temple and helps you find the sociable animals in their native environment.
Get picked up from your hotel and transfer to Tokyo Station, where you hop aboard a bullet train bound for Nagano. After getting whisked through the countryside, arrive in the city and make for Zenko-ji Temple. Founded in the 7th century, the temple houses the first Buddhist statue ever to be brought to Japan when the religion was introduced to the country. Stroll through the ornamented main hall and soak in the history of the place through stories from your guide.
Break for lunch on your own before climbing on a bus for Jigokudani Monkey Park. Translating to “Hell Valley,” Jigokudani is also known for its steaming geysers and hot springs. Explore the park with your guide and get up-close with a number of snow monkeys, who have become accustomed to humans roaming about their home. Watch the monkeys' entertaining interactions with each other, or catch some taking a soak in the steaming baths around the park.
After snapping plenty of photos of the lovable animals, head back to Nagano city to catch your bullet train to Tokyo.
