What you can expect

Embark on an off-road expedition in a Land Rover through the Laurisilva forest, and then hike to the summit of Pico do Arieiro for rewarding views of Madeira. Afterwards, hike along the levada canals to encounter local farmers harvesting sugar cane before arriving at the coastal village of Canical.

Prepare for a full-day adventure and be sure to pack a bottle of water along with a few snacks before meeting your tour guide at your hotel lobby. Depart Funchal en route to the Laurisilva Forest at the center of the island. The mild, subtropical climate makes it easy to explore this 40 million year old forest where ancient trees lay deep down the valleys while waterfalls cascade from the cliffs above.

After touring the forest, head out on foot to reach the summit of Pico do Arieiro where panoramic views of Madeira Island await. Your next stop is the Miradouro da Guindaste viewpoint at the northeastern tip of the island. Sea cliffs face the edge of the Atlantic as waves crash down on the rocky shore below.

Ride south to explore Porto da Cruz where Portuguese settlers established one of the island’s oldest catholic parishes. The grand Penha de Águia towers above the region and is inhabited by endangered seabirds. Your final stop is the small 15th century fishing village of Canical on the eastern seaboard. While sparse, low-lying bushes are a stark contrast to the lush forests to the west, the locals are kind and welcoming. The expedition concludes with a return trip
