Begin in Sultanahmet Square, where some of Istanbul’s most recognizable landmarks stand within a short walk of one another. If you are on a cruise ship, your guide will meet you at Galata Port and you will reach the old town on tram ( included). As you cross the square, your guide will point out Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque and help you get your bearings in the Old Town. Hear how the Ottomans took Constantinople in 1453 and how the sultans reshaped the city as their imperial capital. By the time you reach Topkapı Palace, you’ll know why the sultans built their palace here and how it became both their home and the seat of government.

Step inside Topkapı Palace with your guide and discover how the Ottoman sultans lived and ruled here for nearly four centuries. Arranged around a series of courtyards, the palace functioned like a small city, with council chambers, ceremonial spaces, garden pavilions and private quarters. Your guide will explain who could pass through each gateway and how close they could come to the sultan. Explore the palace’s open sections and collections, pause on the terraces for views over the Bosphorus toward the Asian shore and across the Golden Horn. Stroll through the terraced gardens, where seasonal flowers add colour and tulips bloom in spring.

Step inside the Harem, the private quarters of Topkapı Palace, and discover how the Ottoman imperial household was run. Your guide will separate myth from reality as you learn about daily life, education and ceremony, and how the Queen Mother governed the Harem and wielded influence at court. Walk through the eunuchs’ quarters, the Courtyard of the Concubines and the Queen Mother’s rooms. Along the way, admire İznik tiles and finely inlaid doors as you hear about the lives of the imperial family, the women who came from across the empire and the eunuchs who helped administer the household.
