What you can expect

Indulge in a day of traditional Japanese landscapes in Gifu prefecture's standout attractions Hida Takayama and Shirakawa-go. Look forward to quaint old historic streets, a unique village, stunning mountain landscapes and sampling local delicacies.

Setting off from Nagoya station, sit back and relax on the 2.5 hour bus journey enjoying the landscape turn from an urban sprawl to the rural and rugged Northern Alps mountains, increasing the anticipation for the trip.

Time to stretch the legs at Hida Takayama where the picture-postcard prettiness is immediately striking. This well-preserved castle town is known as 'Little Kyoto' for its historic district full of character and townhouses from the Edo period. Wander through this area and have a poke around the various shops. The surrounding forested mountains and Miyagawa River flowing nearby provide the perfect backdrop.

Rest and recharge for lunch. Choose from 3 options (tour price varies based on choice):

Kei-chan chicken:a local chicken stir fry dish originating from the Gujo district of Gifu Prefecture and is chicken, which has been marinated in miso, soy sauce and garlic, pan-fried with vegetables such as cabbage and onions.

Hida beef hotpot: thinly sliced local Hida beef is prepared in a hotpot with vegetables 'sukiyaki' style (sweet soy sauce based broth.) A non-beef option can be prepared. Please mention this at the time of booking if interested.

No lunch: Free to choose your own lunch or bring it to the tour.

With bellies full, make your way to the World Heritage Site Shirakawa-go which is famous for its unique “Gassho-zukuri” style thatched-roof houses. Explore this special village to get a true sense of what rural life in Japan was like. Beautiful all-year round, make sure to snap some photos from the various observation decks before boarding the bus to return to Nagoya.
