What you can expect

This is not a bus tour or sightseeing stop. It’s a full hike to Iceland’s most active eruption zone: Fagradalsfjall, where new lava flowed as recently as July 2025.

Located in the Reykjanes Peninsula just 40 minutes from Reykjavík, this small-group or private adventure takes you through black lava fields, steaming hills, and dramatic viewpoints shaped by recent eruptions.

Why choose this tour?
• Small group – no buses, no crowds
• Real Local guides from Grindavík & Keflavík with real eruption experience
• Walk around the lava and learn the science behind each eruption
• Walking poles included if needed
• Other surprises during the tour

Hiking details:
• 8 km total (round-trip) Flexible based on the weather and conditions.
• Elevation: Moderate up 300 m
• Time: 3–4 hours walking time, adjusted to the group’s pace

Bookable options:
Self-drive Option: Plan for up to 4 hours.
Includes:
• Grindavík fishing village pre-tour
• The Hiking Experience

Pickup Option: Plan for up to 6 hours.
Includes round-trip transfer from Reykjavík and also:
• Grindavík fishing village pre-tour
• Seltún geothermal area
• Kleifarvatn Lake

This experience is perfect for: geology lovers, photographers, families, and anyone who wants to walk Iceland’s newest land with someone who’s lived through the eruptions.

The tour explores the real volcanic landscape of Iceland—including fresh lava fields and, when possible, active lava during eruptions.

All photos you see are taken by our guides during actual tours. Some show glowing lava. Some don’t. That’s because volcanic activity is unpredictable. Eruptions can pause or restart with little notice.

When it’s happening and safe, we always update the route to include the active eruption site. Red lava is never guaranteed.

When it’s quiet, we focus on the dramatic Fagradalsfjall area, filled with recent lava flows and incredible scenery.

Our guides will always provide you with the best experience, regardless of the weather or conditions on that day.

*Please ensure you read all the details carefully before booking to avoid any misunderstanding.
