About Shimba Hills National Reserve:
Shimba Hills National Reserve is a small National Reserve in Kwale County 33 km south of Mombasa. The reserve still maintains undisturbed areas of coastal rainforest, woodland and grassland. It is referred to as the “Paradise of the Sable antelope”. Shimba Hills also hosts the highest density of African elephants in Kenya. You will marvel at various species of Flora and Fauna, including the Sable antelope, elephant shrew, bushy-tailed mongoose, and other small mammals. Other animals you expect to see and learn about include: white monkeys, buffalos, giraffes, and impalas.
For bird lovers, you will experience a rich forest birdlife while the grasslands hold localized species such as red-necked-Spur fowl, Croaking Cisticola, and Zanzibar Red Bishop.
Detailed Itinerary
Pick-up is at 7:00 AM from your Diani accommodation for the short drive to Shimba Hills National Reserve. Along the way, enjoy scenic views as your guide shares cultural insights. Arrival at the park gates is expected by 8:00 AM, depending on traffic and entry procedures.
After ticketing, enjoy a guided game drive (8:00–10:00 AM) through rainforest and grasslands. This is an excellent time to spot the rare sable antelope, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, smaller mammals, and abundant birdlife.
At 10:00 AM, begin the hike to Sheldrick Falls. The trail is about 2.5 km each way (5 km round trip) with steep sections and over 300 stairs, requiring moderate fitness. At the falls, rest, take photos, and, if you wish, cool off in the plunge pool.
By 12:00 noon, those opting for lunch continue to Shimba Green Lodge, just outside the reserve. Meals are available at USD 20 per person (payable directly) in a tranquil setting, with time to relax by the pool or simply enjoy the surroundings.
Following lunch, the return journey begins, with drop-off back at your Diani accommodation expected by around 3:00 PM, subject to road conditions.
