Description

Stunning geothermal features, dense forest, and a lake shrouded in Maori legend make Rotorua a dream destination for outdoor explorers. On this kayak tour, paddle across Lake Rotoiti to a secluded hot spring. Enjoy a barbecue dinner before drifting through a grotto filled with glimmering glowworms.

You guide picks you up at your hotel and drives you 20 minutes to your launch site on Lake Rotoiti. After a quick safety briefing and a lesson in paddling technique, you're ready to climb into your kayak. As you cruise, your guide shares some of the Maori myths that surround the area and its geothermal marvels.

Rotorua's gurgling mud pots and sky-high geysers put this region's dramatic thermic activity on impressive display, but the underground turmoil also creates some of the most peaceful and serene natural wonders around. As you approach the lake's southern shore, steam rises from the naturally fed springs of mystical Manupirua. While you relax, your guide prepares a delicious barbecue meal to enjoy before you continue on.

When the sun begins to set, take off for the second leg of your kayak tour, paddling across the lake until you reach the hidden glowworm cave. Take in the magical spectacle of these luminescent creatures, scattered across the cavernous ceiling like shimmering constellations, before making your way past quiet coves along the water's edge, back to shore for the return drive to your hotel.

We had a wonderful time. The glowworms were amazing! The team aware very friendly and helpful. The kayaking is quite a fast pace to be warned that your arms will get sore, but it’s worth it. The BBQ was lovely. The team provide juice drinks for the meal. It may be nice to have water as an option for the meal too. The hot pools are ok, just be aware that the toilets are just seats leading to a giant human waste collection. Don’t look down! It wasn’t the highlight of the trip, but the pools were nice to visit. A lovely trip though altogether!

Guide Rachel led us on a lovely lake paddle to Manupirua Hot Pools for some relaxed soaking and a leisurely dinner. From there,a long cross-lake paddle to Glowworm Caves for slightly disappointing, cramped viewing before heading home, arriving well after dark. Although slightly too long (arrived back at hotel using our own car at 10:30PM) and tiring (some arduous paddling through evening choppy water), the beauty of the lake, the hot and soothing temperatures at Manupirua and Rachel's steady stream of local color and info made this trip worthwhile.
