What you can expect

Begin your journey in Galway City at 8am and travel through Co. Mayo to the breathtaking island of Achill. With rugged coastlines, golden sands, and towering cliffs, Achill Island is anything but ordinary. As you explore these spectacular landscapes, your guide will help you delve deep into the fascinating history, cultural traditions, and lifestyle of this unique island.
On the way to Achill you will journey through the picturesque towns of Newport and Mulranny. Both settlements are key points on the Great Western Greenway – a popular trail that runs from Westport all the way to Achill Island. The Greenway is suitable for both walkers and cyclists and was voted among the top three cycle trails in the world by the New York Times.

Once on the island, you will explore the area’s breathtaking landscapes including the stunning Atlantic Drive. Not to be confused with the Wild Atlantic Way, the Atlantic Drive was designed to showcase Achill’s shores, as well as those of the neighboring Corraun peninsula.

As you travel, you will feel like you’re on the edge of the world as you encounter the island’s wild and dramatic seaboard. From golden strands to majestic cliff faces, there’s something new to see around every winding corner. Prepare to be awestruck as you soak up the unique atmosphere of one of Ireland’s most unspoiled landscapes.

Along the Atlantic Drive, you’ll have the chance to see the seaside village of Dooega, home to one of Achill’s stunning Blue Flag beaches; Achill Island lifeboat station - a valuable asset to this coastal community; Grace O’Malley’s Castle/Kildavnet Tower, the former stronghold of Grace O’Malley, Ireland’s pirate queen; Ashleam Bay/Portnahally Bay, famous for its eye-catching white cliffs; the Minaun Heights, known for their panoramic views of the island and beyond; Clare Island and Achill Beg, visible from Achill on a clear day, and promontory forts, evidence of structures dating from the Iron Age.

By lunchtime, you’ll have had a busy morning and be more than ready for refreshment. Enjoy a leisurely meal at The Beehive Restaurant – a delightful place on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The Beehive prides itself on serving the best of Achill’s local produce, especially seafood. You will have the chance to browse The Beehive’s craft shop, full of unique ideas for gifts and souvenirs.

On your way back to Galway you will stop for a break in Westport, where you’ll have time to explore and shop. Due to its history and architecture, Westport has been officially designated a heritage town. It has also won a wide range of awards over the years, including Best Tourism Town 2014, Retail Excellence Best Town in Ireland, and Best Place to Live in Ireland 2012.

You'll be back in Galway by 6:30pm.
