What you can expect

  • Begin your walking tour at Storneskaia, the cruise ship pier. Walk across the Hellebroa bridge to Aspøya, perhaps Norway's most densely populated island. Hear the story of the city fire, the Art Nouveau style, and some of the city's merchants.

Stop outside Ålesund's beautiful marble church and the characteristic Aspøy elementary school. From here, enjoy the view north across the fjord to the islands where some of Norway's most powerful clans lived during the Viking Age.

Continue down Brunholmgata to one of the city's most beautiful Art Nouveau streets, Apotekergata. At the end of it lies Apotekertorget, with a view of Ålesundet—the sound that has given the city its name. At Apotekertorget, there will be time for a photo stop.

Wander further along Ålesundet toward the north side of the sound, to the memorial of the North Sea traffic to England during World War II.

The next stop is Kongens gate—the city's pedestrian street, featuring what might be the city's, or perhaps Europe's, narrowest house.

Conclude the tour at a specialty cheese shop, where you will get a small taste of two Norwegian specialties.
