Overview

VISIT ONLY IN SPANISH.

The Brussels region has 19 “communes” or town councils. Specifically, in Saint-Gilles and Ixelles there are several of the most notable houses of Art-Nouveau architecture, created by the most innovative architects of the late 19th century. Do you want to discover them? (All houses will be seen from the outside, an interior visit is not included in any of them).

Learn about the most used techniques in the world of Art-Nouveau.
What is sgraffito, and how is it different from frescoes?
What was the first Art-Nouveau house?
Discover the remains of Victor Horta's Maison du Peuple.

All this and much more on a three-kilometer tour of the outskirts of Brussels, where you can admire some of the most beautiful streets of the Belgian capital.

Activity itinerary

Horta (Pass by)
We start our walk at the Horta Metro station. We will go down to discover the mysteries it contains.
Av. Paul Dejaer 9 (Pass by)
Perhaps one of the least known Art-Nouveau houses, but also one of the most striking. Who created the Maison de Beck?
Municipality of Saint-Gilles (Pass by)
Saint-Gilles lives not only from Art-Nouveau. The entire neighborhood stands out for its beautiful architecture, and the town hall was not going to be less.
Av. Jef Lambeaux 25 (Pass by)
Paul Hamesse may not be one of the most famous architects in Brussels, but he created great works that are admired by all who pass by, for example the old Pathé Cinemas in the city center. At this point we will see the exterior of his personal house and we will comment on his life and work.
St. Gilles Prison (Pass by)
You may think it's a castle, but it's actually a prison. Perhaps one of the most beautiful in the world. Why was it built here, in the middle of town? Did it have a special purpose?
Clinique du Docteur Van Neck (Pass by)
Perhaps, after several restorations, this is not the clearest example of Art-Nouveau, but certain peculiarities make it particularly interesting for this walk.
Maison Hannon (Pass by)
In every corner of this city we can find an impressive house. The architect Jules Brunfaut did not want to be left behind, and here we can see the only house he built in the Art-Nouveau style in Brussels.
Horta Museum (Musee Horta) (Pass by)
The home and studio of the most famous Art-Nouveau architect in Belgium and perhaps worldwide. His personal home is also a museum dedicated to his art. We will see the building from the street.
Maison Hankar (Pass by)
If we can only talk about two modernist architects in Brussels, the first is undoubtedly Horta, the second would be Hankar. This is your personal home. What's so special?
Maison Roosenboom (Pass by)
Called Maison Rosenbaum or Roosenboom, it was the personal home of this architect. Perhaps one of the houses that most reminds us of Alphonse Mucha's famous posters. What will that be about the sgraffito?
Hotel Janssens (Pass by)
Perhaps this façade leaves us a little cold if we look at it superficially, but once you get into the details, you will not be able to miss them. One of the most remarkable works of Paul Hankar, attached to another of the most remarkable works of Paul Hankar.
Hotel Ciamberlani (Pass by)
Totally remarkable, the current Argentine Embassy in Brussels is one of the clearest examples of Art-Nouveau Architecture with one of the most beautiful sgraffito that can be found on a building. Enjoying a mate in this building must be an absolute pleasure!
Hotel Tassel (Pass by)
It is considered the first work of Art-Nouveau architecture in the world. Designed by Víctor Horta and completed in 1893, it marked a turning point in the history of architecture. We will end our tour admiring this house, which was named a World Heritage Site by Unesco in the year 2000.
