Activity itinerary

Giuseppe Garibaldi Square

  • 15m
The tour begins at the lively Giuseppe Garibaldi Square, lying at the intersection of five main streets lined by vibrant-colored buildings. The beautiful fountain in its center features a modern abstract sculpture that intrigues thousands of visitors coming every day for the architectural showcase and the cheerful atmosphere of the regular outdoor markets.

Oratorio della Confraternita dei Neri Mortis et Orationis

  • 15m
Just a stone’s throw away is the eye-catching Salesian Church. The imposing structure sets itself apart with its distinctive blue and white stripes and exquisite mosaics. What’s more, inside the church is an enchanting world of intricate frescoes and stunning furniture flooded with an incredible green clarity, an effect of the stained glass.

Corso Cavour

  • 15m
Upon leaving the tranquil oasis, head to the commercial avenue of Corso Cavour. The tree-lined street abounds in delicatessens, pizzerias, and eateries spreading aromas of great food. The highlight of all is watching locals in the busy morning market displaying inviting trays of fresh seafood, juicy fruit and vegetables, and colorful flowers.

Via del Prione

  • 15m
Then, move on to Via del Prione, another attractive thoroughfare. The delightful street winds through elegant boutiques and pleasant cafés alternating with historic buildings, offering great chances for window shopping and people watching.

Castello San Giorgio

  • 15m
The next step is to conquer the hilltop where San Giorgio Castle, the most emblematic icon of La Spezia, dominates. Dating back to the 13th century as a mere watchtower, the structure was later modified into a formidable fortification guarding its beautiful city below. It’s worth considering giving the site another visit and making a day of it to experience the archaeological museum inside the castle and the cable car service.

Giardini Pubblici

  • 15m
Proceed to stroll in the seafront Public Gardens, perfect for long walks in the shade of the majestic trees and enjoying the excellent views and the refreshing sea smell. Besides a variety of peculiar plants and trees in bloom year-round, numerous lovely fountains, benches, and sculptures are scattered throughout these historical gardens.

Monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi

  • 10m
The star of all is the majestic bronze statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi at the heart of these serene gardens. The 60-ton bronzework located in a beautiful flowered setting with clear views of the sea and the mountains is one of the few equestrian statues in the world with a prancing horse standing only on its hind legs.

Ponte Thaon di Revel

  • 15m
At the end of the fascinating tour, take a stroll along the photogenic Bridge of Revel to unwind from the hustle by enjoying the cool breeze and admire the backdrop of the hilly city and the castle of San Giorgio as well as luxurious yachts and cruises in the busy seaport.
