What you can expect

Discover the haunting beauty of Tskaltubo’s abandoned Soviet-era sanatoriums on a guided tour from Kutaisi. Once a glamorous spa resort famed for its “waters of immortality,” Tskaltubo attracted thousands of visitors during the Soviet period — including Stalin himself.

Depart from Kutaisi and begin your journey at the abandoned Tskaltubo train station, an impressive relic of the town’s Soviet-era infrastructure. Continue to the Metallurgist Sanatorium, where elegant staircases, vast corridors, and a grand chandelier recall the site’s former splendor.

Next, visit the functioning Bathhouse No. 6, built especially for Stalin’s planned visit. Explore its hallway preserving original 1950s décor and have a peak at swimming pool constructed specifically for Stalin. Move on to abandoned Bathhouse No. 8, famous for its striking futuristic architecture and design.

Conclude your main tour at Sanatorium Medea, with balcony with monumental colonnades, offering a glimpse of its historic grandeur.

Depending on group interest and time, the tour may also include the Ex-Military Sanatorium, where half of the building has been renovated and half remains abandoned, creating a fascinating contrast of well-maintained and decaying Soviet architecture. Highlights include a large concert hall with original chairs, chandelier, and a small Soviet museum. (Entrance fee: 25 Lari.) The optional visit may also include Sanatorium Gelati, known for its mosaic playground.

Please note:

  1. Access to some areas may vary depending on safety and availability.
  2. Take care when exploring abandoned buildings, as floors and structures may be unstable.
