Visit the FAMM (Femmes Artistes du Musée de Mougins), a private museum in the historic hilltop village of Mougins, near Cannes, dedicated exclusively to women artists. Founded by collector Christian Levett, FAMM holds the distinction of being the world's first museum outside the United States with a permanent collection focused entirely on women's contributions to art history.
The collection spans more than a century, moving from Impressionism through Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and contemporary art. Across each gallery, FAMM traces a connecting thread: many of the women represented here were celebrated and exhibited during their own lifetimes, only to be written out of art history in the decades that followed. Today, their work is being rediscovered and re-examined, and FAMM presents it directly alongside the male artists their careers ran parallel to.
Highlights of the collection include Impressionist works by Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt, Surrealist photography and painting by artists including Dora Maar, Leonor Fini, and Lee Miller, and major contemporary works by artists such as Jenny Saville and Marina Abramović. The museum also holds loan partnerships with institutions including Tate Modern, The Met, and Centre Pompidou.
