The crash of North Sea waves accompanies the distinctive thwack of golf balls at the Whitby Golf Club, perched on a clifftop above the water at the gateway to the North York moors. As good a cliffside walk as there is, the 18-hole course is punctuated with unique challenges. The capricious wind may unexpectedly change directions in the middle of a game. Come prepared for an exciting round of golf, followed by a relaxing drink at the clubhouse at the end of the game.
Walk out onto the lawns and begin the game along the coast which, despite the sometimes variable weather, remains a pleasant challenge for a low-handicap golfer. On the sixth hole, feel the exhilaration of attempting to launch the ball across the Upgang Ravine, keeping strategies in mind for the 18th hole on the way back. Continue onto the pleasant parkland round of holes, which offers a break from the winds and challenges of the coastal portions. Head back toward the sea on the last few holes, a grand finale for the game.
Appreciate the simple pleasures offered inside the clubhouse, from a drink at the bar while overlooking the course , to a full meal. Have a pre-game bacon butty sandwich or full English breakfast before the game or a roast dinner afterward.
