A very unique hotel in a tiny town were you feel part of the past. I arrived at 5 m when all the stores were closed and all daily visitors gone so it was a cool bit bizarre experience being on my own with the other handful of folks staying in town. The hotel was cute and comfortable though internet didn’t work after 8 pm (cell reception is remarkably good), and had not come back when I left in the morning. There’s no TV either which for me was a plus but given the fact that there’s not much to do after 6 pm, it’s something to consider. Bring a book!
Be aware that the room is VERY basic with good AC and a very well stocked minibar outside the room in the common hallways. The shower is a bit sad and it was hard to keep a steady temperature since it would go from very cold to very hot without touching it. I paid for breakfast but they don’t serve it until 8 and I had a long day ahead so had to leave way before there was anything open for a bite. Do not add breakfast to your room if you are thinking of leaving before 8.
In summary, if you are looking for a unique experience like I was, this place is great. However, it’s not for everyone and a day visit when everything is open may be a better choice for you.
Excellent hotel highly recommend
Very clean and centrally located
Highly recommend dining at the hotel dinner was absolutely delicious !
Only criticism would be extremely poor wifi (I would say none even though the hotel says it has free wifi!)
Also very limited mobile phone reception in Walhalla
Gorgeous town worth the trip!
Staying at The Star in Walhalla was the loveliest experience. We had the best time relaxing in the old world charm of the hotel and enjoying the walks, tours, good food that Walhalla offers. Would recommend this hotel and plan to return with friends soon.
Stayed at Walhalla's Star Hotel last November.... really enjoyed it.
Decided to see Walhalla again on our way to Melbourne for the flower show.. Great place for photography and don't forget the Walhalla Goldfields Railway train trip to Thompson.....really enjoyed it.

New "Old Hotel" in Gold Rush town
Rebuilt in 1998 for the original gold rush hotel, the Star is a good idea but needs some more work. On arrival the staff member seemed abrupt, the room, though large, has no pictures or anything decorative, the flowerpots outside the hotel were not tended, and this "new" hotel is beginning to fray after 18 years.
Walhalla is a charming little place with lots of history and the hotel which is located right in the middle of Walhalla perfectly blends into the town - both the outside and the inside of the hotel show the history and the staff is very friendly and service-minded.
Lovely time at the Walhalla Star. Only issue is with Expedia, they do not provide any details of the guest who is arriving so they cannot tailor the arrival for you.
And it is a wonderful town, so historic

Bit pricey for the quality but lovely town
Pretty little town. Nice hotel but bit pricey for what you get - price probably reflects scarcity of accommodation rather than quality of the room. Low quality towels. Tiny corner shower with clingy curtain - like what you get in a cheap caravan park unit. Shame since there is enough room for a proper shower. No TV is probably for charm but would be nice to have the option. Meals were mostly great. Service was a bit 'going through the motions'. Overall would recommend.
Loved the historical town and surrounding area. A great way to get away from the city. Hotel staff were very friendly and were very happy to tell us all about the history of the area and places to go. Hotel is in the centre of town and it is fun to explore the area.
The Star Hotel is situated just right so you can explore the best hidden gem that is Walhalla. The accommodation is great and the staff are extremely helpful. No TV, no internet, just a great atmosphere which helps make for a peaceful stay. We'll be back!!
Pleasant I have a little bit of feedback I would like to give. I was only away for one night. The drive there is beautiful and the town is historic and in the ranges. I stayed in the hotel and took a walk.
Stayed for one night in July 2015, room very cosy and clean. Lovely staff. Through no fault of the hotel, there is no TV or mobile service available and if you require Internet, you must purchase at the hotel.
Arriving after dark on a bitterly cold Winter's evening, the cosy warmth of the guest lounge was bliss and our room was toasty warm. The hosts made us feel very welcome and were very helpful. Breakfast was simple but done very well and the addition of in-house poached fruit was a nice touch - so much nicer than canned.
Very pleasant. Weather was cold, which we liked, with rain one day, so we sat by the fire and read. Other days we walked and discovered the beautiful town and its environs.

Beautiful location - Perfect Autumn destination
Walhalla in Autumn is just magnificent with red, orange and yellow trees dotting the countryside. The tiny town is full of friendly people and there were lots of campers enjoying the ambiance while we were there and the smell of wood-smoke was delightful.
The hotel was warm and the staff very friendly and obliging. Unfortunately there is no Optus mobile and the Telstra service is intermittent - depending on the weather/cloud cover. We were also surprised to find there is no TV in the rooms or even in the lovely, homey lounge area down stairs. There was also no wifi so we felt very isolated from our families. Just as well there is a public phone box (so unusual nowadays) in the main street. The room was very spacious and well equipped but the bathroom was not 'luxury' and the poor water pressure was an issue. If you want a retreat away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, then this is the place for you. But if you want modern conveniences and luxury, this is probably no going to suit.
