Sea Heather Cottage

Hidden away in the part of the Midcoast that leaves natives as speechless as visitors, the pristine beauty, quiet solitude, and stunning waterfront define Sea Heather Cottage. Named for the hearty yet delicate flower that grows in the salty crags of the Maine coastline, this comfortable and cozy cottage is a perfect retreat for those who want to get away without completely unplugging. Nestled on Broad Cove, the epitome of unspoiled Maine, Sea Heather’s privacy is abundant and the stars at night will be the brightest you’ve seen thanks to the virtual lack of artificial light. In the midst of all this, it is hard to remember that town is just 15 minutes away but it most certainly is.

Sea Heather is situated on two-and-a-half acres of wooded land and hundreds upon hundreds of waterfront offering views from three sides of the property. The cottage has a large lawn and wooded paths leading to sun-drenched rocks and the salty, ever-changing Broad Cove bay. See bald eagles and ospreys dive for fish and seals bask in the sun by the dozens.

Chairs situated at the water’s edge offer a shady place to read, observe and relax. Kayaking and swimming are optimal here for those who are comfortable navigating changing waterways and those who are mindful of tides. Peter’s Pond – a freshwater swimming hole – is about a mile away and the well-maintained trails of the Medomak Valley Land Trust are also close by. This is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise!

The cottage is charming, sunny and bright, and uncomplicated. There are two bedrooms and one bathroom, a living room, a full kitchen, and an eating nook. The best spot in the house is the front deck – shaded by large, mature trees this is a place to enjoy coffee in the morning or a casual dinner as the sun sinks behind the horizon. There is an outdoor dining area here with seating for up to six people. The kitchen is fully equipped with a full-sized electric stove and refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and coffee maker, and toaster. Off the kitchen is an adorable, sunny eating nook, with banquet seating, that can seat up to seven people. The living room overlooks the deck and the waterfront thanks to a virtual wall of windows – there is plenty of comfortable seating, great light for reading, and a flatscreen television with satellite connection.

The primary bedroom has vaulted ceilings, views of the water, and direct access to the deck. This bedroom has a double bed. The second bedroom has two twin beds and is on the other side of the cottage from the master bedroom. It also has views of the water. The cottage’s bathroom is full with a standup shower.

Special setting yet ready for updating--
We 3 adults enjoyed the quiet setting, the eagles in the trees above us (whoa!), the layout of the place, and more. Unfortunately, three areas are ready for updates: the only bathroom, the windows (which simply need a good cleaning, inside and out), and a few trees (because selective pruning, especially of deadwood, would make water views real). Otherwise, thumbs up--and thank you.

Beautiful Setting in Quaint Setting
My husband, dog, and I had a marvelous time at Sea Heather and we hope to return. Central location for easy trips to Damariscotta and Rockland, if you can bring yourself to leave to beautiful cabin setting looking out on the water from the main bedroom or living room. The kitchen was very well equipped (unusually so), which was great because I love to cook! Other reviews noted signs from neighbors - those are about a mile away, not nearby at all. Cabin was a little dated but has everything you need and the beds were absurdly comfortable. Definitely recommend!

Picture Perfect with an asterisk
We had a wonderful 2 week stay at this property. It was the perfect size home for our family of 4 (kids aged 9 & 12 shared the room with two twin beds). We never touched the TV. We swam, boated, paddled around when the tide was high--pay attention to the tides. The house is perfectly stocked with everything you will need to cook, read, puzzle, and game. It's clear that this is someone's home and it held a lot of love. The water access and views are unmatched. Incredibly private spot. It's geographic location is great--can get to rt. 1 easily or down the peninsula an. And from its location, the whole of Midcoast Maine is your oyster (or lobster). Now for the asterisk (well maybe two). While the geographic location of this cottage is heaven, the road to get there is not picture perfect. It passes a fair number of houses/trailers that made me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome, The boat, furniture, and trash graveyards that line the road eventually get easier to drive by without seeing. But the hand painted political signs never truly fade from view. Oh, and the green head flies never leave you when you get to the water. You can't change your neighbors. And this house was a wonderful place for us to escape to during uncertain times. It is a special home and we are grateful we were able to spend our vacation there.
