Stunning Lakeside House in the Sierra de Castril Natural Park

Set within the Sierra de Castril Natural Park this traditional Spanish 'cortijo' enjoys a spectacular location with views over Lake Portillo and the surrounding mountains. Sympathetically restored recently, the property combines traditional features with modern comforts. A 5 minute walk takes you to a secluded lakeside bathing spot in crystal clear waters and there are numerous walks that begin at your front door. The charming town of Castril with its traditional whitewashed cottages and narrow cobbled streets is a 10 minute drive or lovely 30 minute walk through the olive groves.

Casa Turquesa itself is a spacious three bedroom cottage with a large kitchen/diner and cosy living room with traditional fireplace. The kitchen is well equipped with an oven/hob; large fridge; and microwave. A large dining table and corner sofa enjoy views of the lake from a full height window. The lounge has a lovely wood burning stove for the cooler winter evenings and comfortable armchairs and sofa. There are books, games and jigsaws to while away the time. Upstairs there are two good sized bedrooms - one twin and one with a King size double - both enjoying views over the lake. A family bathroom comes with a new shower. The third bedroom is located on the ground floor in which a daybed can be used as either a double or two singles.

Outside there is a superb three tier terrace equipped with dining table and loungers from which you can enjoy magnificent views over the lake and the surrounding landscape - an ideal space in which to dine, stargaze or simply laze the afternoon away.

This is rural Spain at its best in which the pace of life is slow. English is rarely spoken but you will find a friendly welcome everywhere. Walking opportunities abound in the Natural Park and can range from a pleasant stroll through the olive groves to a tough day in the high mountains. The Park is famous for wildlife, especially birds and you will enjoy great close-up views of eagles and vultures. Summer days are hot and the cool, clear waters of the lake will prove irresistible. For the more active, canoeing, kayaking and horse riding are available in the local area.

Castril the local town is friendly and full of character. Don't miss the spectacular gorge walk, lovely swimming pool and climb to the viewpoint of Pena del Sagarado Corazon. Relax with drink and some traditional tapas in one of the many bars afterwards.

If you wish to venture further afield the city of Granada with the stunning Alhambra Palace is an easy 1.5 hours drive away and the winter ski resorts of the Sierra Nevada a similar distance. There are geothermal springs close to Lake Negratin and prehistoric sites at Orce and Galera. The stunning Renaissance city of Ubeda is another essential day trip.

The house is perfect if you fancy a relaxing holiday off the beaten track and want to experience the real Spain but there are a couple of things you should know. There is no Wi-Fi and the phone signal at the house can be hit and miss (although a short walk up-the hill usually secures a signal). There is also no T.V – its very much an “off the grid experience”.

The nearest airport is Granada – a 1.5 hour drive but it is also an easy drive from Alicante. Murcia, Malaga and Almeria all of which are served by the usual budget airlines.

Casa Turquesa
House could really do with a good cleaning. Beds very comfortable, bathroom and shower ok, but water pressure upstairs is low. Location fantastic for us, the views are amazing. It's 15 mins by car to Castril. It's not a detached house (this wasn't very clear in the advert). We enjoyed it, it's a bit expensive for 2 people but there's room for 5 which makes it very affordable.

Perfect for relaxing and enjoying the stunning scenery.
The directions could’ve been slightly clearer further away from the property. Get supplies in before arrival nowhere open on a Sunday.

Wow, a stunning find, if you like a sense of remoteness then this is the place for you!
Andrew was very efficient & offered good instructions & all worked well. The property is newly converted with all the facilities you would expect in a UK property. Its in excellent condition. The Casa is on the end of an old farmstead complex on the edge of a cliff ( the photos don't really show that properly) so don't go if you have issues with heights & I would NOT recommend it for infants for this reason, otherwise its a little bit of Spanish perfection! The track down to the property is 'entertaining' for the last 100 metres but you cant have isolation & expect to have perfect tarmacked tracks to boot, that's part of the charm of Casa Turquoisa. I watched Vultures & other raptors soaring overhead most days & with the Castril & Cazorla y Segura national parks so close this is a paradise for nature lovers. Go there.

Absolutely stunning.
This home was the highlight of our trip. The spacious terrace over looking a picturesque serene, clear mountain lake was stunning. It take some effort to get there from Madrid with hours of winding mountain roads but it was well worth it (and part of the allure if you appreciate a good drive). The house was very recently and tastefully decorated with all the amenities you would expect from a lovely vacation home. The house was very very clean and bright and offered the feeling of perfect seclusion. Overall it was a phenomenal experience and we hope very much to one day return.

Excelente casa y zona

Zona preciosa, alojamiento precario

geraümiges haus in schönster lage

Wonderful, nature-rich location, off the beaten track
An amazing place to visit with rural but vibrant towns nearby and beautiful hills and mountains at your doorstep. Easy, friendly communication with the hosts, who were very kind to accommodate our wishes. We’ve loved the tranquility, the landscape, hiking trails, and the chance to experience Spanish life without the tourists.

Javier y Caridad
